About the adventure

The summer ends as you gather in a high mountain pass to celebrate the Autumnal Equinox. The desalpinage of cattle, descending from summer meadows to winter markets is marked with feasting and celebrations. It's a sight to behold, cows crowned with flowers, fat and happy, parading through village streets. You sing, feast on the last of the season's bounty and the fresh roasted beef, drink new wine, and take in the last days of summer sunshine. The next day, you descend the mountain together, and lost in the mists, find yourselves in a forest you don't recognize. It's wilder, more primeval that what you left behind. You have entered Tepest. All Our Mother's Children is a folk and survival horror campaign for D&D5e set in the dread domain of Tepest. It is build for tier 1 characters, but may end at level 6 or 7.

About me

My name is Joe Gaylord, I work in games as Lazarus Game Lab. I've been playing RPGs for over 25 years, and since 2018 I've been publishing my own content and games on DTRPG and Itch. I run smart games that I hope get people thinking. I enjoy puzzles and moral conundrums for players. I also enjoy games that draw on global mythology and diverse cultures. I'm not a flashy DM with a lot of technical wizardry behind me, I play simple old school games and tell stories you'll never forget.

Character creation

Creating your character

Build a level 1 character, using standard array. Keep in mind the game's folk horror setting and opening scene. Consider why you're at the Fall festival. You can access options from the 5.5e PHB rules and the Ravenloft supplementary content. I play old school. I prefer pencil and paper and physical dice, and I will trust you for the most part. Please send me a copy of your character in a PDF or scan. During session 0, we will review characters (or build if you need help or have questions). Levelling will happen by milestones.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need to join my Discord Server. You will need to make a character and send me a scan, PDF, or other digital copy of it. (If you're not comfortable making a character, let me know, we can run through it in session 0)

What Joe brings to the table

I am a pretty old school DM, I do voices and love adding ambient music. Some combat elements may be theatre of the mind, but I will run significant fights over Owlbear Rodeo which we will try out in session 0. I do my best to stay rules as written, but there may be some stretching of the rules in situations where they don't work or would bog down the game. I enjoy adding philosophical elements and dilemmas in my games, so expect games that will ask you to do some thinking.

Homebrew rules

Near death experiences cause a level of exhaustion and may cause a lasting injury. Characters who die will be offered an opportunity to return... At a cost. There will be elements of the game which cause Mental Stress, as in the 2024 DMG.

Safety

How Joe creates a safe table

I will send a trigger checklist which we will review in session 0. That will set Lines and Veils for our play. We will include a variant on X cards, which functions as a stoplight: Green "We're in an area that could be an issue, but I'm ok for now" Yellow "This is fine, but we're close to my limit" Red "Stop." After sessions I'll ask for Stars and Wishes, time permitting.
