About the adventure
Your task seems simple enough: escort a wagon of mining supplies from Neverwinter to the backwater village of Phandalin. But mother always said trouble had a way of finding you. Still, there's a small part of you that wouldn't have it any other way. Welcome to The Lost Mine of Phandelver. This level 1-5 adventure is ideal for newer players eager to deepen their journey into the world of D&D. It will take you from a green, wide-eyed adventurer to a veteran campaigner who has liberated a town, rooted out a cult, and survived ancient horrors you didn't even know existed when you set out from Neverwinter on that fateful day. If you had known then what you know now...you'd probably do it all over again. Because if this experience has taught you anything, it's that this world needs more people like you.

About me
I have 30 years of GM-ing experience, going all the way back to the mid-90's, writing and running campaigns for Cyberpunk 2020 and Star Wars to D&D 3.5 and finally 5e. I've just recently completed running a two-year Tomb of Annihilation campaign on Roll20. I am an artist and writer who values personal creativity, and encourages it in all aspects of the game, from character backstories to my own descriptions and artwork.

Creating your character
Players will be given a Roll20 link for the game when they sign up. Click "Launch Game." Once inside, you will be able to create your character using the PHB 2024 character sheet. Use the Standard Array or Point Buy for stats. No homebrew, please. We'll stick to the classes and sub-classes in the 2024 rules, but there are no restrictions beyond that. Take the starting equipment for your class and background, but you can customize by swapping out items of equal value. It will make your experience feel more immersive if you have an idea for a backstory before Session 0. If you have more than an idea, great. I can work with anything and offer suggestions if needed. The best piece of advice I can give is to create a character you're excited to play.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You will need a Roll20 account for our VTT and character creation. You will also need a Discord account. Once you create your character Roll20, you will be free to add character art and a token. No sweat if you don't know how to do that. I can set you up with a token based on your gender, species, and class. You will also need a Discord account for audio/visual. I'll also send an invite to my server when you sign up and you can use the chat feature to say "Hi" and discuss character ideas if you wish.
What Chris M brings to the table
I make it my goal to create a fun and inclusive atmosphere at the table. Your character's backstory is so important in bringing all aspects of the game to life for you. Here's what else you can expect: A dedicated Discord server with channels for voice and video, brainstorming, and general banter. This allows for easy communication between players, as well as a space to explore character backstories and goals. A Roll20 Pro subscription, with the purchased 2024 Players Handbook, giving full compendium access to my players. Curated music through Roll20 jukebox for ambient immersive soundtracks. Patience for new players learning D&D, the Roll20 platform, or both. We'll figure it out. A safe roleplaying environment. I have zero tolerance for bullying or sexual violence/aggression against NPC's or player characters. This will result in immediate removal without refund. For other forms of nonsense like passive/aggressive or disruptive behavior, we'll have a private conversation before you're asked to leave. I have a responsibility to the other people paying for an enjoyable time.
Homebrew rules
Drinking a potion is a bonus action if you roll for healing. If you take it as an action, you get the max. On a critical hit, you max the first die and roll the second. I like this rule because it ensures your critical doesn't completely flop. However, it works both ways. I do not use a Critic Fumble Table. On a critical fail in combat (natural 1), you regain control, but your action ends. You can still move or take a bonus reaction.

How Chris M creates a safe table
Once players sign up, they will receive a consent checklist, which will allow them to identify themes, items, or topics they are fine with, okay with (if veiled or handled offstage), and absolutely not OK with, before the session. I will accommodate and work with the communicated comfort levels.
