About me

Welcome to The Wit's End! I'm Ben, and I've been playing Dungeons and Dragons in some form or another for the last 14 years and GMing for 11 years. I run in-person Dungeons and Dragons 5e (2014 rules) games in the Philadelphia area with difficult encounters, large rewards, and inspiration awarded for wittiness, cheeky retorts, and clever roleplay. I love homebrew and often improvise my loot rewards on the fly. I also enjoy writing adventures and NPCs, and I love a good sidequest. Come join The Wit's End today! We're going to have a dangerously good time.

Character creation

Creating your character

it is highly recommended you purchase a session 0 (only $50!), but if you have not, please roll your characters using any of the resources in the digital library and use the '4d6, drop lowest' stat rolling model. If you wish to reroll your stats, you must reroll all of them and may only do so once. Homebrew is welcome and must be approved before game start.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Please browse through the digital library and either choose a module I own, provide me with your own, or purchase a custom one. Become familiar with tools you will need for our games such as the catalogue of items.

What Ben brings to the table

Dice, dice towers, and character sheets provided. If additional paper is required, please bring your own.

Homebrew rules

Critical Successes and Critical Failures Critical damage is rolled damage ×2 + 1 Each combat critical triggers the opportunity to roll from the Fumbles and Brutalities table both for you and your opponents Critical failure damage is directed at yourself or your closest ally by a coin flip If you get a critical success on your initiative roll, you go first. If you get a critical failure, you go last. For skill checks, critical rolls count as automatic successes and failures, respectively. Inspiration Inspiration is awarded for wit, cleverness, making me laugh, and exemplary roleplay. Additionally, if you arrive dressed as your character, you gain inspiration from the start. One inspiration per character and it carries between sessions, so don't forget to use it. Sometimes I'll award a free nat20 if you already have inspiration and do something truly incredible, but it's rare. Inspiration dice must be used before announcing your roll to the group or to me. Once you tell me your roll, it's set in stone. Character Stat and Health Sharing Please do not share your character stat numbers at the table to determine who completes an action or puzzle. Instead, use immersive language like, “my character is very strong, I think I should try to do this", or “please help, I'm wounded!" The health of enemies will be conveyed to you using this language as well with creatures at or below half health being described as “bloodied" or “wounded" and creatures with 10% or less health remaining described as “critically wounded" or “near death" When rolling your stats, I prefer to use 4d6, drop lowest. (Ex. If you roll a 6, 5, 4, and 2, the stat is 15 {the two is dropped}) Death and Unconsciousness If you fall below 0 hit points, you are considered unconscious and roll a death saving throw at the point you drop below 0 and each subsequent round on your turn. Rolling a 2-10 counts as one failure, 11-19 counts as one success. Rolling a critical failure counts as two failures. Rolling a critical success brings you back from unconsciousness with 1 hit point. Enemies will still attack you when unconscious with each hit, regardless of damage, counting as a failed death saving throw. Applying healing potions or kits or a medicine check of 15 or higher will stabilize an unconscious character and they will cease making death saving throws. Applying healing potions to a stabilized character will bring them back from unconsciousness with as many hit points as the potion provides. Acton Economy and Combat You may use a potion as an interaction. You may use any action you have as a bonus action as a regular action. Any attack, ranged or melee, made from behind has advantage. Behind is situational, but mainly requires your character to be able to attack anywhere on their target's backside, not the side. If you forget to use an ability, an attack, extra damage, or a bonus action, they are lost, try again next turn.

Safety

How Ben creates a safe table

The X-Card safety tool will be available to all players at The Wit’s End. If the content is beyond acceptable limits for any player, they may invoke their X-Card by placing their arms visibly in an X form or saying the words “X Card”. The Wit’s End will then lead a discussion with you to determine a path forward.
