About the adventure

Your party has made a long voyage, against the advice of many, many sailors, on a route that goes near Stormwreck Isles: A place where ships go in, but don’t come out. There are rumors of ancient battles of powerful dragons who once called them their home. Since then, it has been completely abandoned… Or has it? This game is geared toward beginners. Whether you are playing for the first time, trying out a new class, or dipping your toes into virtual tabletops, my table is open to you. If you have more experience, you're welcome to join! Just be patient with the total newbies. This module was one of the first published for 5e, and it was the first I DM'd. I will be adding my own touch here and there, but the bones are basically the same. This campaign is about as D&D as D&D can get. The tone will be light-hearted and whimsical, with a touch of mystery. There will be dungeons. There may even be dragons. Steel yourself, and set sail to a new adventure!

About me

I’m Bardic Markus, a game master who can turn 1) a phrase and 2) the party (into frogs). I’m a long-time fan of fantasy, an avid enjoyer of D&D, and a storyteller to my core. I've DM'd in-person and online, for newbies and veterans, for roleplayers and tacticians alike. If you love Fantasy, Mythology, and drama, come try me out!

Character creation

Creating your character

The first half of the first session will focus primarily on character creation. You will use point buy to generate stats, and you will start with standard equipment. You will create characters on D&D beyond using D&D 5.5e core and expanded rules. Most D&D 5e (2014) content will be allowed, but needs DM approval. Homebrew is disallowed for Learn to Play.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players can join the Discord. Links to the Campaign on D&D Beyond and Roll20 will be provided. You need a stable internet connection, working microphone, and (optional) webcam.

What Bardic Markus brings to the table

I do character voices and show myself on camera to enhance roleplay. I encourage players to do the same when they are comfortable (I want to see your beautiful faces!). My combats are tactical and challenging, sticking to the rules as written as much as I can.

Homebrew rules

Learn to play games will be 100% rules as written. As they say in jazz, "You gotta know the rules to break the rules."

Safety

How Bardic Markus creates a safe table

I will go send a form for consent in gaming. In session 0, I will go over my hard rules in detail (respect for other players, safety tools, cheating policy, etc.). I use a version of X, N, and O cards. Sessions will have a 10-15 minute break halfway through. Out of session, my DM's are always open for any safety concerns.
