About the adventure
The ocean world of Saphira floats in the sea of stars like a cosmic jewel . . . Its many peoples live across dozens of island chains, which legend has it were once part of great continents, shattered in ancient times by the breaking of the great moon Lushira, whose pieces fell from the stars. And that was just the first cataclysm to befall Saphira's peoples . . . A generation ago, a rain of meteors called the Starfall prophesized a time of great change is at hand. The many tribes and nations sent explorers out to find the fallen stars and learn what they meant. Few returned. Now the sacred monsoons come with greater frequency, terrible quakes shake the land, mana storms unleash their fury, and something even stranger is happening - the ocean itself is receding, leaving exposed new lands, filled with monsters, secrets, and danger . . . Into this world, your heroes come of age, and destiny has marked you for greatness in these trying times. A Conclave of nations is called by the wizard-king of Raelion, and you have been chosen to escort your nation's representative on the perilous voyage across the turbulent seas . . . Your Journey is about to begin . . . About the Game: ✧ You are the Heroes of your new favorite JRPG "Heroes of Tidefall" ✧ Changing Tides, Terrible Monsters, Scheming Villains, and more threaten everything you hold dear! ✧ Save the world of Saphira! ✧ If this game was a movie, it would be an Anime with the worldbuilding done by Hayao Miyazaki and with a storyline written by Akira Toriyama, and would be rated PG for mild violence and comedic mischief About the System: ✧ Fabula Ultima is an Ennie-Award Winning new game system meant to evoke the feeling of JRPG Video Games in a Tabletop format. ✧ Its rules are simple to learn but still allow for surprising depth and customization. ✧ Players actively help design both their characters and the world they live in, and are encouraged to contribute actively to the narrative ✧ Its rules and mechanics are even easier to learn that D&D 5E, and can be mastered in a session or two at most.

Meet the Game Master
About me
Hail and Well Met! I am Overlord Jim (It's an old internet handle I happen to like, just go with it) and I have been running and playing TTRPGs for over 25 years now. My nerd credentials start with climbing every castle tower within driving distance of our home in Great Britain when I lived there as a child. My love of that era has lead me to become a serious medievalist scholar with a particular emphasis on the Early Medieval Era (better known as the Viking Age), and I have more than a passing familiarity with the Crusading Era and the Hundred Years War as well. My bookshelves are packed with all the classics of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Genres, and most of them are well loved with many creases in the spines. I got into theater as a teenager and minored in it in college, but my B.A. is in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations, and I have most of a Master's in International Studies that I just couldn't afford to complete. Someday I will go back for a M.A. in Medieval History, but for now, I content myself with reading it constantly to write better roleplaying books in historical settings. I am a Veteran of the Sub/Dub Wars (Dub Forever!), I believe one can like both Star Wars and Star Trek (though the latter is clearly superior), and my definition of a good night out always involves character sheets, dice, and stacks of roleplaying books. I have been a Storyteller as long as I can remember in my real life, I've been an aspiring novelist since my teens, and when I discovered these games, I was instantly hooked. I'm forever enamored of the freedom this medium offers. You have complete freedom of direction - you could go anywhere you can imagine and do anything the system can support (and often, quite a bit it was never meant to do but the GM makes it work!), which is something no other medium of entertainment can deliver, and you join in this endeavor with your friends as collaborators, and the story you tell together is always bigger than the sum of its parts. Every table and every troupe offers a unique experience, and I want nothing more than to come craft an epic story together with you. And I do mean EPIC. I love putting my PCs in the middle of the most exciting chapters in the history of their world, and handing them the power to change events for the better - or worse, if they so choose - just to see what they do with it. My favorite system - Exalted - is perfectly suited to this style of play, where I cast players in the roles of reborn Demigods out to save the world - or destroy it. What legends will they tell of your deeds? Come join my table and find out. A few entries from my Roleplaying Resume: - 25+ Years Experience behind the Screen - Specialized in Non-D&D Options [Exalted, Scion, Classic World of Darkness, Star Wars RPG (FFG Version), and more!] - Always willing to try a new system or setting - 10+ Years Experience as a Presenter on the Art of Game Mastery (https://www.facebook.com/ArtofGameMastery) - Coming to a Convention near you! - 10+ Years experience running Convention Games - Published Freelance Writer (Renegade Games Studio, High Level Games, Storyteller's Vault, Storypath Nexus, Jonstown Compendium) I have decided that all future scenarios I write will be with an eye towards their eventual publication, so you won't just be participating in an awesome online experience - you'll be playtesting new gaming materials too! About my Pricing Structure: I am a Plotter GM, not a Pantser GM, to borrow an analogy from writing - while every GM gets good at Improvisational GMing by necessity, it isn't my first choice and I prefer to come to the table with most of the prep work done long in advance. Therefore, my pricing reflects not only the time at the table, but also the time building the scenario, statting out the NPCs, planning the combat encounters - if you have ever run a TTRPG, you know it is at the very least a demanding Part Time Job if not a Full Time Occupation in and of itself! So while I do understand everyone in our hobby is perpetually broke (Roleplaying Books are an expensive addiction and Kickstarter is a hell of a drug), I also need to price in my prep time too. Besides, I plan to use any revenue I make from my endeavors here to pay for the art to decorate the books I'm writing - so you aren't just paying for an incredible STing experience - you're also helping to develop new RPG material and funding its development costs. You are contributing to the future of your hobby, which now more than ever is driven by the independent creatives like me who are invested in expanding it. So know that my time factors into the cost of the seat, and that your ticket to the game is going to support the hobby we both love. I look forward to rolling dice with you soon!

Creating your character
We will be using the Character Creation rules on pages 154-175 of Fabula Ultima Core, and we will also be doing all the Session Zero steps in pages 145-153, including the Players contributing to the Worldbuilding of Saphira's history and current circumstances. I am really looking forward to further defining the game world with you. It is my intention to maintain a generally High Fantasy feel for Saphira, with touches of Natural Fantasy. The advanced technology of Techno-Fantasy may have had a place in this world's history, and maybe in its future as well . . . I recommend you read over the Character Creation rules and the Character Archetypes on Pages 176-219. I have access to the other sourcebooks in the series if one of those classes appeals to you, but I would prefer to stick to the core classes if possible. Characters will be the standard starting level (5).
What to expect
Preparing for the session
This is a game played over the Internet, and as such some means of reliable voice communication is necessary, so a mic and speakers so we can hear you and you can hear us are essential. A webcam is nice but not necessary, though I do prefer seeing my players' smiling faces whenever possible (It gets lonely being the only one on Camera!) You should also have made a player account at Foundry and communicated that to me, and sent me your Discord Handle as well. I use Zoom for the voice and visual communications, so you should download the Zoom Client as well. All of these setup steps should only take a few minutes. (Note: you do NOT need to pay for accounts at either Zoom or Foundry. My paid accounts cover all of us.) I would recommend you acquire and begin reading the Fabula Ultima Corebook, which is available from many sources including DriveThruRPG. It is a fairly breezy read as far as TTRPG Books go - I finished it in a weekend - and I think it's a neat little system, which is why I am running it. Other than that, go watch an Isekai or go play your favorite JRPG. This is where we'll be sourcing our collective inspiration for this run, after all.
What Overlord Jim brings to the table
As a GM, I bring my theatrical background (which sometimes manifests in unique character voices, and always shows up in their unique motivations), my decades of experience in front of and behind the GM Screen, and my love of all things Roleplaying. I have played with the Rule of Cool long before it got its name, but as this is a Learn to Play, I will try to stick to the Rules As Written for the most part, but I can and do bend and break systems to do things they were never meant to do in the name of letting the players pull of that one cool thing they thought up that the system was never meant to simulate. I am your character's biggest fan from the moment I meet them. I want your characters to be Big Damn Heroes, and everything I do behind this screen is to help you do that. My Villains will be terrible, so that your confronting them can be glorious. My worlds will be full of evils both grand and banal, so you always have something going wrong you can make right. I want you to become Heroes with a Capital "H", and I will cheer on your characters every step of the way. I have a confession to make: I love combat. I am a relentless action junkie who loves nothing more than throwing your precious characters to the wolves - figuratively and literally! My monsters howl for your blood and will gnaw on your bones if you don't fight smart and watch each other's backs. I will use every system the game has to simulate deadly combat, but it must be said that I am more of a Theater of the Mind GM than a Tactical Grid GM. This is a story about exploration, so I hope you're ready to venture into the unknown. It is one of my very favorite things to see in a game, taking you somewhere no one has ever seen so you can have that “Moment of Discovery”. There is always Terra Incognita in every Fantasy World, and you will be visiting a lot of it in this story. My favorite part of all, though, is the roleplaying. I live for that moment when I watch you become the character, speaking their words, affecting their mannerisms, and making choices that ring true for the Character above all. I invite you to a deep immersion with your character, and can't wait to see you become them. I look forward to meeting you and your Heroes!

How Overlord Jim creates a safe table
I run all my games and my server as a safe space for everyone, and both are explicitly and aggressively inclusive. You are welcome at my table if you can follow the game's rules and play nice with others. Pronouns and identities are to be respected, BUT we also do not take offense when people make honest mistakes trying to honor them. (I guarantee I will flub your pronouns at least once, but will always try to self-correct when I do) I WILL NOT tolerate people deliberately and intentionally making my clients - who often become my friends - feel unsafe and uncomfortable. This is the expected baseline for everyone in my games and on my server. You WILL be asked to leave the game and the server for deliberate offenses against the other players. I use a Pre-Game Survey to implement Lines & Veils. Once compiled, the Lines & Veils document will be posted on the Discord Server and reviewed as necessary, such as when new players join and their Lines & Veils are added. We will discuss them in Session 0. We use the X, N, and O Cards, and you can use them visually or submit X N & O Cards by PM, but the visual usually gets my attention faster. It is my usual practice to do a mid-game break, and we can do breaks as needed after intense scenes. I encourage high quality roleplaying and thus am prepared to deal with Bleed as it occurs. I often forget to do my Stars & Wishes, so please remind me so I get better about that. I am always open to constructive criticism, it's how I improve as a GM, and I'm always trying to run a better game than the last one. I do not expect nor plan for this to be a particularly dark game - rather the opposite - but you should know that all the evils in my games are there for a purpose: to make your Light Shine all the Brighter. Any and All Evil that exists in my game worlds is there to be confronted by Heroes like you. Find the Evil Cultists and stop their terrible plans. Confront the Demons some careless sorcerer unleashed and banish them. Defeat the Enemy Army and save your city from total destruction. Evil exists to be defeated by Heroes. Be the Heroes.
