About the adventure

This game will work off the Brindlewood Bay Powered by the Apocalypse mechanics. Don't know what that is? Do not worry, that's what I'm here for. But before that, let us set the scene. You are a Grandmother- settled down in the quaint, cozy town of Brindlewood Bay. A coastal town in New Brunswick. In an effort to meet people and finally try something new, you've joined a local book club called the Murder Mavens- centred on your favourite obsession-- the Golden Crown Mysteries series. Each session involves an episodic like "mystery of the week", where you and the fellow Mavens will look for clues, to solve the crime before the local police department. Serialized through these mysteries your group will begin to uncover a more sinister, and dark supernatural mystery. It's worth noting that I lead with humour and rule of cool through my games, however this system at is core deals with the supernatural. If things like cults or sacrifices are not your thing, these are themes that could come up. They will not be the dominant piece- but could fold themselves into the deeper mystery. If you're a fan of Murder She Wrote, or the Cozy Mystery genre in general, I encourage you to reach out and get your prescription magnifying glass ready!

About me

Two core pieces of my identity that I bring into my games is that I am an experienced improvisor and a registered psychotherapist (though I do not intend at all to market/ posit that I am providing any sort of therapy). I have been improvising for about as long as I've been doing TTRPGs, six years. Both began just before the pandemic. An unfortunate time, for obvious reasons. A fortunate time, as both really have had an uptick in popularity. I perform frequently in my home town, and have been featured on national news twice for teams I've been on. I love the roleplay style games, and bringing the world's, characters and stories to light. I also love relationships and the "who the characters are", something I draw from my psychotherapy work. I am curious of people and what leads them to make decisions, and I bring this into my games. Outside of these I am a huge fan of mystery television, so for better or worse, expect it in campaigns or one shots. I like having players minds ticking away on plot as they explore. I have been playing for sixish years, and GMing for four. I love writing worlds/ campaigns and spaces where players are readying to explore.

Character creation

Creating your character

Like any good Television show, the pilot episode will be lighter on the narrative and more about the characters. We will walk through our characters in session one, followed by a shorter mystery. You begin by finding yourself in book club and we will walk through each grandmother together. As encouraged in the source material the GM (or keeper) may have some questions about your backstory to talk through. There isn't level ups per se but character's will max out stats as they progress session to session.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

There is a wonderful blog written by Matthew Balogh found here https://startplaying.games/blog/posts/how-do-you-create-character-brindlewood-bay.

What Jason Summers brings to the table

My background is in improv and psychotherapy-- so I like to roll with the punches and dig deep into the emotions of "what's really driving us here". Groups with over the years have remarked that "I've brought fun back to role playing" and "that I really do have an affinity for cute little guys" (I love bringing in an NPC or familiar who just wants to hang around). While I do love bringing in stakes and intrigue for players, I at the end of the day want my players to have fun. A wonderful part of Brindlewood Bay is there are many mechanics built to save your Grandmother, just in case.

How Jason Summers creates a safe table

We will utilize messaged X,N, & O cards, as well speak through Lines and Veils through session 0. The setting involves Murder, Police, and supernatural horror elements. We will speak through the limits to which people are comfortable with those overarching themes, and as well pieces people would prefer are just not a part of the story lines.
