About the adventure

We will use the excellent Narrative Dice system and the Fantasy Flight Rulebooks (especially Force and Destiny). 'Rule of Cool' and 'Theater of the Mind' are more important than 'crunch'. Gameplay is roleplay-heavy and rules-light. The storm-troopers miss a lot of the time (just like in the movies!). Extreme violence and some content is off the table (defined by players in Session 0). The rules will be simplified or 'hand-waved' when they interfere with pre-existing story and player choices already in play, but changes will never penalize any one player. No player death and disfigurement. We're here to share some Star Wars style fun, not PTSD (even if your character has a touch of it :) This campaign will employ Discord AUDIO ONLY calls and RPGSessions to integrate dice rolls and sheets. The style is space opera fun with elements of loss and risk, and even greater moments of recovery, triumph and humor. Sessions are capped at 3 hrs. Your time is important!

About me

Stories are my passion. I'm a writer, podcaster and voice actor but most of all I am a storyteller who values unique, immersive journeys. My goal is to create a comfortable, safe environment for players/characters to have fun exploring. Each session will be role-play heavy and rules-light, with a collaborative story giving every player a chance to shine. I will create our adventure from scratch to surprise, engage and leave you eager for the next session. If you're just starting out with RPG's or Star Trek Adventures I'll help you create the character, understand the basics and jump right in! I got my first D&D manual when I was nine, but I took a long break. Later I became a professional actor and Improv performer, then a narrator and producer of podcasts and audio-books. A friend re-introduced me to D&D during COVID, which reignited the passion to play. In turn, playing inspired me to run games for others.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will be using RPGSessions for character sheet management and interconnected dice rolling. Feel free to consult the following resources, but also talk to your fellow players and GM before and during your paid session 0 to shape them to be the most pleasing to you AND the best balances for the campaign. Resources will be shared in our private Discord server, where gameplay will be narrated over audio, with image/map/meme-related accompaniment.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should have a comfortable place to play on an AUDIO-ONLY channel. Find a place you can speak freely and hopefully laugh or shout out loud several times a session :) Please test a microphone/speaker/bluetooth headset combination that works for you. The bigger the monitor the better IMO but the game can comfortably played by phone over Discord and RPGSessions.

What JohnRunsGames brings to the table

I will provide a Discord server locked down to players in your campaign. Integrated dice rolling, sheets and more will be available in your browser via RPGSessions.com. Both are free to use. Story, images, maps, grids, Easter eggs and hints will be provided over the AUDIO only Discord channel while rolling, stat-counting and character/ship/other sheets will be displayed in RPGSessions.

Homebrew rules

DICE, RULES & COOL in STAR WARS 'Destinities' will be roleplay-heavy and rules-light: abridged or skipped when it helps the players and suits story. DICE create advantages and setbacks we will narrate for ourselves, between players and with GM/ If a rule blocks an action or role-play, I will follow the 'physics' of the game and modify the rule to honor setting, story and player agency. HOW ARE RULES MODIFIED? We'll follow the spirit of the rules and make decisions that serve the story, the players and the Star Wars aesthetic in the 'Rule of Cool' style/ When the rules might interfere with player enjoyment or the 3 HOUR SESSION LIMIT, we will modify them. HOUSE RULES 50% XP bonus above character creation amount. NO Gruesome Injuries or player death. STARTING INHERITANCE XP: at Table's agreement any character can 'inherit' ONE item between 10-20,000 that fits character and story. NO characters can't 'keep the change' as XP :) Choose a Force dice roll BEFORE attempting a skill check. lightsabers inflict personal scale damage AND vehicles vehicle scale damage. Rolls that cancel out “escalate” to re-rolling the check with an upgrade on BOTH sides. Initiative is fixed, rather than rolled (slows game) unless sensible for story (IE minions or rivals get the drop on players). Initiative order alternates (NEMESIS or PC, NPC, PC, NPC, ETC). Minions or Rivals MAY go first for story reasons IE if they get the drop on players, but a Nemesis ALWAYS gets initiative unless there is a pre-existing reason players go first.. INCAPACITATED PLAYERS CAN TALK They may just be dazed and staggered, can only manage basic maneuvers or incidentals IE crawling or talking and CANNOT affect the opponent or aid allies. (To allow moments like when Luke losses to Vader...but they can still have a little chat :) Only ONE party may flip a destiny point in any interaction: PC and the GM can't flip a destiny point on same roll (it negates choice and slows story). Melee and brawn can slow the game down: simpler and less frequent rolls decide outcomes unless very important to story. Grenades can be thrown with brawn OR agility. Encumbrance level is raised to 10+ Brawn to simplify things, allow people to bring more with less crunch. SESSION XP We aim for 5 events: 2 or 3 major encounters and 1 or 2 character opportunities (roughly 2-4 xp per each event, per character, but STORY COMES BEFORE XP parity. GM awards XP after every session. Rulebooks recommend 10-20 per character. GM call out moments that earned extra XP but awards a group total shared equally around the table. An additional 5 XP bonus may be granted for key milestones or completing story arcs. Key scenes honoring a character's Motivation can grant up to 5 XP per session. GM may award extra 1-2 XP for exceptional roleplaying or clever character actions. COMBAT DOES NOT GENERATE XP Enemies should provide challenge, but fighting them should be considered an obstacle, not an objective.

Safety

How JohnRunsGames creates a safe table

In Session 0 we discuss: -expectations, likes and dislikes, and boundaries as players -feedback(regularly collected publicly and privately) -Monte Cook's 'Consent in Gaming' will be discussed -Table will establish content to be avoided and/or kept 'off-screen' Horror, body mutilation, sexual violence, current events/politics and personal/political agendas will not be introduced. Sexual content must suit stories and player comfort levels and be suggested/veiled/hinted at (kept offscreen). Force-control, slavery and body possession will be discussed by the players given their use by the Crime rings, Empire and Sith. Clear limits and lines and veils will be assigned. This Table is a safe space for all players. No hate, gaslighting, modern-day issue debate on politics, gender, sexuality, cultural or religious issues are welcome. Morality is an important issue in Star Wars gaming and will also be discussed by the table. Treat everyone as you wish to be treated, and make special allowance for how they might wish to be treated, even if that is different than your preference. If it's a hot button? Please don't push it. Let's share our love of star wars instead :)
