About the adventure
Nobody planned for the underground. The apocalypse wasn't a slow generational slide — it was sudden. A winter fell over the Earth without warning, society collapsed within a single lifetime, and the people who fled into the caves are, many of them, still alive to talk about it. The trouble is, none of them remember what actually happened. Ask an elder what caused the winter and you'll get silence, a shrug, or three contradictory answers depending on who you ask. The calamity is not ancient history — it's a wound that's still fresh, and the not-knowing is its own kind of horror. It has been exactly one year since The Village — the name the survivors gave their new home in the caves — finished building itself out: shelter, farms, defenses, a fragile social order. The players arrive (or have lived through) that founding year, and the campaign picks up right as the dust settles and the community has to figure out what kind of place it's actually going to be. The Village's founding year was generated through a session of The Quiet Year, and plays wonderfully as lived memory and fresh scar tissue rather than distant myth — elders who were adults before the winter fell, contradictory eyewitness accounts, ruins and salvage that are only a year old but already half-forgotten: The Calamity drove an early community underground, where they discovered a massive broken machine (heat, fire, forge — needs gas and copper) and an ancient buried stone tower rumored to hold the truth of what happened to the surface. Elder abuse and generational betrayal run through the community's founding myth: elders forced into dangerous labor, sacrificed to the lake monster, crushed protecting the mushroom farms — a rot at the heart of "civilization" your players may inherit or have to answer for. Factions splinter from that first community: - The Zero Dawn Church (ZDC) — a worker-class movement that shuns "calamity technology" like electric tools, eventually turns theocratic and violent, and is ultimately overthrown in a bloody elder uprising. - The Cyberpunkers — elders who returned from the ruins fused with scavenged cybernetics and prosthetics, worshipping technology instead of fearing it. - The Cuisineians — a rival community across a monster-infested lake, more advanced in old-world science, afflicted with a leprosy-like surface sickness, dependent on mushroom-derived antibiotics — later enslaved and eyed as a food source by their conquerors, depending on how dark you want that thread to go. - Cherkov Crystals — glowing blue-veined crystals found threading through the cave walls — grant those exposed to them minor supernatural gifts (strength, healing, perception, sparks). No one has yet found a way to refine them into tools or weapons.
