About the adventure

When the crown is up for grabs, what will you do? Join the noble House of Loxhearth, and jump into the deadly, messy politics of a nation in crisis as you do your best to influence who will be the new Monarch of Dornwald! In this campaign you will work together as the members of a noble family and their knights, servants, and sworn allies to: ♜ Make a play for the crown yourselves, or choose who should rule: cut deals, arrange political marriages, and make difficult choices to put the right person on the throne. 🔍Investigate the web of scandals, secrets, and conspiracies that shape the political landscape. 🎭Attend masquerade balls, formal dinners, weddings, and other aristocratic events that double as light entertainment and battlefields of reputation, intrigue, and political maneuvering. ⚖️Balance the clashing interests and colorful personalities of 6 powerful noble families, several faith leaders, as well as the interests of rebels, persecuted witches, organized crime, and foreign powers. 🤍 Do what must be done, for love, honor, wealth, or power, and shape the future of Dornwald! ⚔️ Engage in rare but deadly combat. Assassins never fight fair! This campaign is a low-magic, RP-heavy campaign in an original setting. While you can play spellcasters, any magic is officially forbidden as witchcraft apart from a list of approved religious rituals, and most practitioners must hide their abilities or only use them among trusted friends.

About me

I'm a writer and teacher from the US, now living in Spain. I've been GMing various TTRPGs for over 20 years. I love worldbuilding and crafting stories around my players' characters and the choices they make in-game. I make a special effort to make my games safe and inclusive spaces where we can tell immersive stories together.

Character creation

Creating your character

The characters will start at level 1, and will be created together over discord or during session 0 in Roll20, using the Point Buy system for attributes. Members of the noble families themselves must be human, and I have written lore to incorporate (and very slightly modify) halflings into the setting, as well as some homebrew spiderfolk called the Aranae, but players are welcome to come with other published ancestries which I will do my best to incorporate into the world if they choose them. This is a low-magic campaign setting where most spellcasting is illegal, but you are welcome to play a witch! Just know that publicly using magic may be extremely dangerous! There will be some additional bonus proficiencies/features discussed in character creation that will aid in making sure everyone has something to offer in non-combat situations. For new players, I will happily walk them through the process, up to and including building a character for them myself based on a few questions I ask.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should have a computer, a mic, and accounts on Roll20 and Discord. No dice or character sheets needed, as all will be handled digitally in roll20.

What Nik brings to the table

Many years of experience with GMing TTRPGS and introducing new players Character specific token, either made from your description or using art you send me. I make an effort to use no generative AI images in my games. Digital core 5e 2014 rulebooks on Roll20 A friendly & safe environment for everyone, in and out of the game. Unique tokens for NPCs, hundreds of original maps and battlemaps, and more Flexible playstyle with incentives to engage with the setting and NPCs LGBTQ+ friendly environment

Homebrew rules

I have a list of home rules I like to use in my games, but I run them by my groups with a quick survey and only incorporate the homebrew rules into the game that everyone agrees to in session 0. For this game in particular, in addition to my usual optional rules, there will be limited access to magic (and characters with magic will have to hide their powers to avoid accusations of witchcraft), setting-specific race/ancestry choices, and some homebrew features to make sure even martial characters have something to offer in a game of intrigue and social maneuvering.

Safety

How Nik creates a safe table

I will send a survey to you that you can fill out in order for me to know your lines, veils, expectations, and interests before the session. We will discuss these things in session 0 as well, build your characters, and play an short opening session. Later sessions will start with a short chat, recap, and then we will get right into playing, with at least one 5-10 minute break. We will end the sessions with a small debriefing to check in on each other, talk about stars and wishes, and to plan what your characters want to do in the next session.
