About the adventure

"High above the windswept moors and darksome woods, the village of Hirot is under siege. Each night, as the sun sinks beneath the western mountains and the candles burn low, a devil-hound stalks the village streets, unleashing its savage fury on the living. From warlord to pauper, crone to child, no one is safe. Even the Jarl, master of Hirot, and his loyal warrior thegns are helpless to stop the beast. " A fantastic starter module for DCC and for getting to know me as your GM. Expect a village full of intriguing characters, a trail of clues, one big nasty monster, and a compact dungeon to test your mettle. Perfect for beginners and veterans alike!"

Meet the Game Master

Less than a year on StartPlaying

About me

Hello, I'm Bert. In my youth, I played Das schwarze Auge. After a break of several years, during which I immersed myself in theater and especially pantomime, I've returned and now see all the advantages that a pen-and-paper role-playing game offers: dramaturgy, improvisation, storytelling, and the lively interaction with the players. For several years now, I've been playing Dungeon Crawl Classics. Initially, I was drawn in by the breathtaking illustrations and enthusiastic reviews, but I've stayed because of the chaotic random tables and the unique madness of this system. From the very beginning, I've been the game master, following the motto "Someone's gotta do it." Today, it's become a true calling. I happily delve deeper and deeper and continuously learn, because there's still so much to discover. I'm open to feedback and ideas, but I also make decisive choices to keep the game flowing.

Character creation

Creating your character

Official DCC rules: Roll 1d6 from top to bottom. One of four randomly generated characters will be played at level 1. Alternatively, for time reasons, they can be created on purplesorcerer.com. If something is deemed too powerful, I reserve the right to impose restrictions. Simply send me your suggestions before the first game session, and I'll give my approval. If you have any questions or special requests, I'm happy to help.

The current party

All official characters are allowed, play which class you like. The GM will think about balancing.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Please note that you will need a Discord account, a Roll20 account, a computer, and a working microphone. No prior knowledge of the rules is necessary. Bring good vibes and snacks.

What Bert brings to the table

My GM style is flexible. Surprise me with a crazy plan, and I will reward it. I particularly enjoy playfully teasing the player characters. In a charming way, they constantly find themselves facing new challenges. I find character deaths regrettable because they also bring a small story to an end. When death does come, it is not cruelty, but consequence. It is the shadow that makes the torchlight meaningful.

Homebrew rules

The nightly regeneration rate is one HD. No permanent loss of constitution after a deathsaving throw.

Safety

How Bert creates a safe table

The safety tools are a way to remind us that the most important thing is to have fun. It's a game, so we don't play to feel bad. But because we are human, things can sometimes be difficult. The main rule is to be nice—not an asshole. We will have a short Session 0 to see which content is a no-go. The X, N, and O cards will be digital. If someone needs a timeout, we can use a funny safe word like "cheesecake." Toilet breaks are an easy way to take a break. I can always fade out content that is uncomfortable. At the end of our sessions, we can have a short feedback round. If someone needs to talk more, I will have the time and an open ear.
