About the adventure
On the fourth day of the first month of Autumn; as the fourth bell rang out from the town square, the body of the esteemed and highly regarded Miss Kinsey Dulland was found on the edge of Catmarsh road southwest of Crawford. Her lady's maid, the widow Merideth Blaustien, has not been seen since the night before. A traveling bag was found along the road with train tickets and ladies' clothes. The local Magistrate Bauer Dulland, is bereft at the loss of his oldest daughter but demands her killer is found at once. Fingers point to the Ashmahti refugees or her missing ladies maid. Some even speculate her fiancé, who remains without an alibi despite their upcoming nuptials in a week's time. So we seek new Lamplighters, ones who can understand the dark and commune with it. Those who seek hidden things. Find this morbid killer; bring justice to our grieving magistrate, put her soul to rest. The Dead and Dying is a supernatural crime horror game combining elements of classic murder mystery novels and films, with both gothic horror and supernatural horror. Think of a cross between Agatha Christie and the Knives Out Franchise with films like The Haunting, Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Crimson Peak. You will play a collective of investigators, the last of a dying group, the Lamplighters, who meld critical investigation with supernatural exploration. As your GM, I will work with you to have a fun and interesting time. While the tone of this game and Ravenloft games are often more dour and serious, I believe in having fun as well. This story takes place on the rambling hills and countryside of Mordent. My version of Mordent is a fantastical domain inspired culturally by 1908 Britain and Scotland, with the added element of refugees from a domain that resembles our 1890s South Asia. While the influx of souls has allowed for great rehabilitation and progress, the clashing of cultures and beliefs about life and death, add a tension to the game. Mordent is a sullen land, a place where it is easy to allow the world to crush one down. Lamplighters provide a small glimmer, a small hope. I always play with the belief that the rules support the fiction. Some days we may use very little of the rules as we play, and other days we may use a lot of them. But the fiction, what makes the most sense narratively and dramatically for your characters, always comes first. This will be a heavy roleplay game. If you want to play but are nervous about that, I am willing to help you with leaning in. Characters will be custom and will be made during our session zero.

About me
Hello I am an academic and author who has been dming for 11 years now. The breadth of my knowledge focuses on D&D 5e but I have become accustomed to other systems as well. I have run games at conventions and am especially studied in horror and drama genres. I prefer gm-ing to playing and have run 12 long term campaigns and around 30 smaller adventures or one-shots. I am happy to learn any system I dont know and run it at a discount for access to a pdf of the rules.

Creating your character
This will happen during a session zero as I will give context to the cultures and species of the domain and let you know where we will be starting storywise. I also have one custom class (not my own) that I will allow. But feel free to think of the character story you want to play, the grizzled detective whose lost everything to this place, the aristocrat with hidden talents, the outsider who speaks with tongues of the dead, the perky debutante who is excited for their first case.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Have Discord and Roll 20.
What Elias brings to the table
I will bring my very best, music and ambience. Roll 20 maps. My games are very cinematic playing out like a tv show or movie, expect to be described things as players that your characters don't see. Game elements are sometimes used outside of their traditional space. I always will add, the rules exist to support the fiction not the other way around.
Homebrew rules
The Savant class, Drama and Dread points.
