About the adventure

The library fortress of Candlekeep is all you have ever known. Well, outside of the books within Candlekeep, the preeminent accumulation of knowledge in the Realms. It is a safe place to live, but it is also tremendously boring. Your adoptive father Gorion has been on edge of late and has amended your already taxing academic lessons to include physical training as well. Gorion has made it clear that we are travelling soon and that you need to be prepared for the road. We are to join his colleagues at the Friendly Arm Inn. Gorion says it is to aid with political problems and the 'Iron Crisis' that is plaguing the coast, but he doesn't meet your eyes as he explains this. You have never known Gorion to lie to you but he is acting strangely. Maybe traveling the road will provide you with more information. About me

I have always had a passion for fantasy role-playing. Before DnD and Pathfinder this was solo, through video games (Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale 1 and 2) as well as Forgotten Realms novels. It took a charismatic online friend to get me to try DnD 5e online. Mastering the VTT was an initial hurdle but I was hooked and the looming pandemic provided fertile timeslots for a relatively inexperienced group. I've been running a long-form sandbox style campaign weekly for seven years, as well as 2-3 other module/AP games. I even transitioned a campaign from DnD5e to PF2e. I intend to throw myself into professional GMing, I enjoy talking with players about character options since players that are passionate enough about their characters to change or tweak them are engaged enough to care. My VTT of choice is Foundry and I believe I have a decent experience level building custom campaigns that I can aid new players learning the VTT.

Character creation

Creating your character

Players are encouraged to make their characters before 'session 0' but 'session 0' will be useful for finalizing characters. I am willing to answer any questions about character creation. Players may use Pathbuilder to make their characters. One of the players in the campaign will be making a narratively focused character, this could be voted on by the players or chosen randomly. Restricted Character Options - gunslinger class - all RARE ancestries, backgrounds, heritages, classes and feats Allowed Character Options: - all COMMON or UNCOMMON ancestries, backgrounds, heritages, classes and feats. (narrative consequences are possible for Uncommon ancestries) Variant Rules: Free archetype

What Nathan brings to the table

Sound: I run a diverse catalogue of music, with sound effects for obvious environmental effects like waterfalls, doors, lightning. Visuals: I will always prepare visual aids for the players. From tactical battlemaps in combat to scenic views of the city as well as the stuffy rooms of a local vendor, it is my goal to add visuals not only for beauty and immersion but so the interpretation of an idea is closer aligned between everyone involved. Playstyle: I love using NPCs for the long-haul. If you encounter an NPC that you like or dislike, expect them to be around for awhile. - I am not a proficient voice actor! I will adjust the speed at which NPCs speak and their diction, but speaking with accents is not a skill I possess. To make NPCs more distinct I will general describe body language or attitude while they speak. - I like tactical combat and use gridded maps for that purpose. - The Rule of Cool is great as long as it is not used with the intention of rule breaking. Quirks: I love the threat and intended speed of combat. I frown on tactical planning after initiative is rolled. Exclamations of intent or asking dichotomous questions are encouraged, but detailed multi-round plans are tactics for before combat.

Homebrew rules

Safety

How Nathan creates a safe table

Session 0 - primarily this will outline any safety requirements, but will also describe my intention in tone and style. Detailing how characters will level and how they can acquire items will be addressed. The fundamentals of Foundry VTT will be discussed as well as my understanding of players proficiency with the VTT. Any remaining time in the 'session 0' will address the world the players inhabit and their place within it. Debriefing - I intend to allow time (5-10 minutes) at the end of a session to discuss any concerns players have. I will generally be available after session to debrief with players if they require privacy.
