About the adventure

Welcome to Karameikos, a rugged frontier realm where settled towns stand only a few days' travel from untamed wilderness, forgotten ruins, monsters, bandits, and powers much older than the duchy itself. The campaign begins in the town of Threshold. While relaxing at the Juggling Ogre Inn, a scream in the street leads to the kidnapping of a local merchant. The trail descends beneath the town into abandoned cellars, natural caverns, ancient ruins, and the beginnings of an Iron Ring criminal operation. What starts as a rescue quickly gives the party allies, enemies, and a reputation that will follow them across Karameikos. From Threshold, the campaign expands into the wider duchy. Travel to the isolated village of Eltan's Spring, confront threats in the Black Peak Mountains, explore forgotten Nithian sites, cross paths with the Iron Ring again, and pursue new opportunities involving places such as Halag, Highforge, and Mirros. The campaign will combine structured adventures with room for the party to decide which leads, enemies, and regions they want to pursue. This campaign uses Crucible rather than Dungeons & Dragons. Crucible is a classless fantasy RPG designed specifically for Foundry VTT, with an emphasis on tactical combat, character customization, teamwork, positioning, and meaningful mechanical choices. No previous Crucible experience is required; I will teach the system as we play.

About me

Hi, I’m Darren Ruckle, a professional Dungeon Master with over 45 years of tabletop experience and 5 years as a full-time pro GM. I specialize in tactical, combat-focused campaigns that challenge players to think, plan, and fight smart. My tables reward teamwork, positioning, and smart resource management—where every encounter feels earned and every victory matters. All my games run on a custom-modded Foundry VTT setup with clean automation, dynamic lighting, and high-quality battlemaps built for fast, fluid combat. You’ll spend less time on setup and more time in the action. If you enjoy structured adventures, gritty dungeon crawls, and combat that actually makes you sweat, my tables are for you. I take pride in consistency, clarity, and professionalism—running on time, keeping communication clear, and delivering the kind of tactical experience that keeps players coming back. Let’s roll initiative.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be created in Foundry VTT using Crucible's guided classless character creation system. We will build characters around their background, theme, skills, talents, equipment, and other Crucible options rather than attempting to recreate a D&D class. Characters should feel as though they belong in Karameikos, but you do not need any previous knowledge of Mystara or the setting. Character concepts and party roles will be discussed during Session 1 so that the group begins with characters who have reasons to work together. New Crucible players will be guided through the entire process.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a desktop or laptop computer capable of running Foundry VTT through a modern web browser, a stable internet connection, Discord, and a working microphone. Headphones are strongly recommended. A webcam is optional. You do not need to purchase Foundry VTT or Crucible. Everything required to play will be available through the campaign server. No previous knowledge of Crucible, Mystara, or Karameikos is required.

What Darren brings to the table

I provide a fully customized Foundry VTT campaign with Crucible rules automation, dynamic lighting and vision, tactical battlemaps, environmental effects, ambient and combat audio, and converted creatures, NPCs, equipment, and encounters appropriate to Karameikos. I also provide Crucible rules instruction throughout the campaign. My games emphasize fast pacing, tactical combat, teamwork, positioning, and meaningful decisions. Outside combat, expect exploration, puzzles, NPC interactions, investigation, and consequences based on what the party chooses to do.

Safety

How Darren creates a safe table

Session 1 will be used to establish expectations, boundaries, campaign tone, and any subjects players do not want included in the game. The Open Door is always available. A player may step away from the game whenever necessary without having to justify doing so. We will take breaks during sessions and use a brief debrief after play for questions, concerns, or feedback. If content crosses a player's established boundary, the content will be changed or removed. Players are not required to explain or defend a boundary during play.
