About the adventure
THE BACKSTORY It's almost winter in the mountain village of Craglook, and its honest dwellers are preparing for the annual pig slaughter to stock up on food for the cold season. Suddenly, tragedy strikes. A band of kobolds descends from a nearby cave and raids the settlement, killing people and burning down houses. Even worse, they kidnap the last pig in the village! How will these folks feed themselves during the harsh months? That's where you, brave adventurer, come in. Can you raid the kobold's lair and rescue the prized animal before those pesky little monsters cook him? A QUICK TASTE OF SHADOWDARK In this original quick-shot, you'll experience all the strengths of ShadowDark RPG. ⏳ Exploration under pressure | Torches expire as you delve into the dungeon, and quest goals are time-sensitive. 🛠️ Limited resources management | Make sure to be wise about how you use them. 🤔 Unbalanced dangers | Overcome them with creative thinking! A RICH, SURPRISING AND FUN SCENARIO You'll be thrown right in the middle of a dire, dense and suspenseful adventure that will not hold punches, but make you chuckle. 😱 Expect the Weirdness! | The adventure may sound like a basic beer and pretzel dungeon crawl, but you'll experience some thematic curveballs along the way. 📜 Explore the Lore! | Uncovering the scenario backstory will help you survive it. 🤭 Enjoy the Laughs! | Things will be pretty serious for your PCs, but we're allowed to have some chuckles at their expense.

About me
I'm an educator, writer, web developer, amateur improv actor and GM with over 25 years of experience. I grew up in Italy, moved to Canada and got adopted into Brazilian culture. I live a multicultural, eclectic life and I bring this variety to my table. I'm well-versed in old-school and contemporary play styles, so my games are fun for casual players and hobby enthusiasts alike. I discovered TTRPGs in the D&D 3.5 era, when I ran several Forgotten Realms and Star Wars d20 campaigns. I eventually branched out into Cyberpunk 2020 and Vampire, as well as indie titles. After discovering the OSR, I GM'd many games using Swords & Wizardry: White Box, Old-School Essentials, Mothership and Shadowdark. I also have a soft spot for epic fantasy systems (Against the Darkmaster, The One Ring) and pop culture-inspired PbtA systems (Cartel, Pasiòn de las Pasiones). Professional skills I use as a GM: 🎓 Humanities PhD. My in-depth knowledge of literary genres helps me portray them convincingly in games. 👨🏫 Teacher. I read players' emotions well, and ensure everyone shares spotlight time. 🎭 Improv. I welcome unexpected situations, and transform them into storytelling opportunities. 💻 Tech. I'm proficient with digital tools, and aim to use them to make online sessions as fun as in-person ones. 🗣️ Polyglot. I can run games in English, Italian and Portuguese, including Learn to Play sessions. When you sit at my table, you get a GM who is friendly, professional, organized and fun!

Creating your character
You'll have both a main character and a backup one (i.e., the one you'll use if your main one dies an untimely death). Choose between these two options. 1. Pick TWO pre-generated characters. (NOTE: If you join last minute and are unfamiliar with the game, I'll kindly ask you to go with this option). 2. Create TWO characters yourself! You can do that online very quickly on shadowdarklings.net, or offline by following the steps on the free ShadowDark RPG Quickstart. We'll use character tokens from 2 Minute Tabletop (tools.2minutetabletop.com). You're welcome to choose your own tokens from the site, but if you find it confusing, I'm happy to provide tokens. :) I'll share links, documentation, and form-fillable PDFs once you join the game.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Required: - Join the Discord server (you'll need a Discord account; I'll share the server link via an onboarding message) - Use a desktop or laptop computer - Test your microphone - Test your webcam - Get to a relatively quiet area for the duration of the session Optional: - Familiarize yourself with Owlbear Rodeo (I'll also give you a basic rundown at the beginning of the session) - Read the ShadowDark Player Quickstart Guide if you want to understand the game's spirit and core mechanics (again, I'll also recap them before we start playing) - Create your own character, either digitally or with pen-and-paper and share it with me on Discord (otherwise you can pick a pre-generated one I will provide) - Get some physical TTRPG dice if you prefer rolling them yourself!
What Andrea brings to the table
Even though we play online, I want to make the experience feel as warm and friendly as playing in-person. I'm going to keep the digital setup simple so we can focus on having conversations without getting overwhelmed by the technical stuff. AUDIO & VIDEO - We'll use Discord for that. - I kindly ask you to keep your camera on while we play, to make us feel as if we are seated in the same room. - Moreover, cameras on help me ensure that everyone is on the same page about what's going on in the game, and is also having a good time! GAMING PLATFORM - We'll use Owlbear Rodeo, mainly to understand your characters' positions as they explore locations. - There will be black-and-white old-school style maps for exploration. - The platform will use dynamic fog, so the environment's visibility will change based on your position and light sources. - I'll use cartoon-style tokens and assets from 2 Minute Tabletop, and you're encouraged to get tokens representing your characters also from that site! DICE ROLLING - The platform also has a simple digital dice roller if you don't have dice available at home. There won't be automations, but don't worry: ShadowDark's math is extremely simple! - You can also roll your own physical dice if you want to add to the in-person feel :)
Homebrew rules
- Characters start at full Hit Dice (i.e., a 1st-level Fighter's Hit Points will be 8+CON modifier). - Torch timer is 30 minutes instead of 60 minutes.

How Andrea creates a safe table
- Barebone Session 0. Even if we're playing a quick one-shot, we'll do a round of introductions to get to know each other, and understand what we like and don't like in gaming. - Quick Breaks. We'll have at least one short break (about 5 minutes) mid-way through the session, and a quick check-in before we resume play. We can have more quick breaks if needed. - X, N & O cards: You can send them to me in private via Discord chat or declare them publicly via video, verbally or group chat. If a card gets sent, I'll briefly pause the game so everybody can catch their breath, and resume from a narrative point we all agree is appropriate.
