About the adventure

Journey into Icewind Dale, where endless night has frozen hope itself. Brave whiteout blizzards, haunted ruins, massive glaciers, and ancient secrets as you explore the frozen wastes to confront the wrath of an angry winter goddess. Taking place over 100 years after the adventures of Drizzt, this campaign blends open-world exploration with cinematic dungeon crawls. Follow rumors between snowbound settlements, choose which dangers to face, uncover mysteries buried beneath the ice, and fight to free the Dale from eternal winter. Expect a rich mix of: - Character-driven roleplay and meaningful choices - Tactical, exciting combat run quickly so it doesn't bog things down - Mystery, dark fantasy, and winter-themed horror New to D&D? You’ll receive patient guidance with character creation, rules, and approachable class choices. Experienced players will find hard choices, dangerous encounters, and plenty of opportunities for clever plans to matter. This is a relaxed, supportive table where every character gets chances to shine. To help create a varied adventuring party, players are encouraged to choose different classes at the start of the campaign. Come and join a story of courage against the cold, where survival is challenging, danger is always near, but hope may yet endure.

About me

I’ve been a tabletop roleplaying gamer since 1978 and have been running games since 1979. Decades later, I still find being a Game Master enormously fun. My ideal group is a cadre of creative people, each free to bring their own ideas, personality, and play style to the table—while making sure their choices don’t come at the expense of anyone else’s enjoyment. I believe the best games are collaborative: everyone gets a chance to shine, and together we create something none of us could have made alone. To me, rules are useful guidelines, particularly when they help maintain balance, fairness, and equity among players. But rules should support the shared experience, not get in the way of having fun. When necessary, I’m happy to favor the spirit of the game over the letter of the rules. Storytelling is also a major part of my life away from the table. I’m the author of six published fantasy books, along with many more nonfiction books, and I bring that experience with characters, worlds, and narrative to every game I run. I'm originally from the USA but live in Southeast Asia. Outside of gaming I like to write code and fiction, do stuff with my wife and daughter, practice martial arts, and enjoy the universe.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will happen in a session 0 using the Fantasy Grounds VTT. Specifics: - Standard Array for attributes (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) - Everyone starts at 1st level - All players get basic equipment + cold weather gear Allowed sourcebooks for characters are: - D&D5 (2024) Players Handbook - Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn (includes the Ice Fisher background) All classes and subclasses in those books work, but due to the cold and weather of Icewind Dale, the ranger (especially the Winter Walker subclass available at 3rd level) may prove very useful. In case you just want to show up and play, I'll have several unassigned characters created ready to go.

Safety

How Daniel creates a safe table

I want everyone to feel like the game is a safe place to relax and have fun. To that end, I use the TTRPG Safety Toolkit so players, if uncomfortable with a scene, can let the group know anonymously by selecting X, N. When one of those appears, we'll handle it at that time. We also set boundaries before the game (lines and veils) and talk at least briefly after every session. Also, players may contact me privately to share their concerns. In this way, I try to provide a safe and fun environment for all the players. Finally, I don't tolerate PvP, theft from players, or other abusive behavior. We're here to have fun as a team working towards the common goal saving Icewind Dale. The danger should to the game world, not fellow adventurers.
