About the adventure

Mothership is a science fiction horror RPG set in the far future, and in this Wages of Sin campaign, you will play the roles of bounty hunters - willing to travel through space to hunt down escaped fugitives, bringing them back to face justice for their crimes. This could include anything from workers trying to escape their contracts, tax evaders, corporate spies, union organizers... anyone that the (primarily corporate) powers that be in this sector decides they want hunted down. You've learned not to ask too many questions - you don't get paid to wax philosophical about the ethics of your job, after all. You get paid for delivering results. As a game system, Mothership is sleek, fast, and easy to learn - you can roll up a character in less than five minutes and be ready to go. It is a 1d100-based system where you want to roll under your relevant stat to succeed, and where failure means your Stress ticks up. The higher your Stress, the more likely you are to panic when something goes horribly wrong - but if you survive, your Stress is also your "experience points", so you'll want to put your character in dangerous situations - and then try your best to claw your way out of it to survive and see another day. I have introduced this system to new players many times, some who had never played a TTRPG before in their lives, and the feedback I get is always that they love the game, the system makes it easy to get into it and involved, and it works great at creating tension. So if you have never played Mothership before, worry not - I am happy to teach you, and you'll be familiar with the mechanics in no time. This campaign will center on a small crew and their spaceship, traveling through a sector of space lacking in any centralized governments. Each planet, moon, or space station has their own rules and laws one must abide by - and when people cross those rules and try to run, a bounty post is published. You are not the only hunters out there, however, and you need to be cunning and ruthless to outsmart, outrun, or outgun the other hunters going after your prey. And while your bounties are human, you know that in the vast expanse of space, there are other, stranger things lurking. Older things, things that man wasn't meant to encounter. You better hope you can avoid them for as long as possible. This campaign is rated 18+, and takes heavy inspiration from the following pieces of media: - Alien - Star Wars (The Mandalorian, Outlaws, anything involving Boba Fett) - Firefly - The Murderbot Diaries - Blade Runner - The Expanse - Cyberpunk 2077

About me

I've been playing RPGs regularly for over twenty years, most of the time being the GM of my group, in a variety of systems and genres. My personal favorites tend to be sci-fi, horror, and dark fantasy settings, but I love trying new RPGs and settings. I'm a teacher by profession, and love introducing games to new players, making sure they have a good experience with them. I've ran many campaigns online, primarily D&D 5e and Pathfinder 1e and 2e, both pre-written campaigns and homebrew adventures. At GenCon 2025, I ran a table in the largest-ever game of Mothership, hosted by the Panic Table, and received great feedback from my players at the end of the event. I've completed several 5e adventures, some for multiple groups, including Lost Mine of Phandelver, Storm King's Thunder, Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, Curse of Strahd and Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden. I enjoy taking these pre-made adventures and campaigns, adapting them to my players and their interests. I want everyone to feel safe, included, and respected in my games. To ensure that happens, I make a rule to always start with a good session zero to set expectations and establish boundaries. I want to keep my games and servers free from talk of real-world politics and religion, and any hateful speech will not be tolerated.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will handle this during session 0, using the official Mothership Companion app (available for free on iOS, Android, Mac, and as a web-app on other devices). You can find the Mothership Player Survival Guide for free from the publisher, which contains all the rules for creating your character. We will also use the Shipbreaker's Toolkit rulebook for generating your starting spaceship together during session 0. Any eventual house rules will be discussed during session 0, there are a few from the Warden's Operation Manual I think would be a good fit for a campaign like this, but I want your feedback on it before instituting them.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need: - the Mothership Companion app on your device of choice - Discord for chat (audio required for sessions, cameras not required but optional - for games like this where we don't spend most session staring at a battlemap and moving tokens around, I enjoy being able to see the rest of the group, and I think it adds to the communication, but completely understand that there are many reasons why someone might not be comfortable with video)

What Marius brings to the table

As a GM, particularly in less dense rule systems like this, I prefer to make rulings rather than stop the session to a halt to look up a rule - that can be done after the session if necessary. I also try to let player creativity and ideas be rewarded, and avoid railroading players into a single "correct" path to take - if you think of a solution to a problem that I hadn't accounted for before the session? Great, that's awesome, let's roll with it and figure out what happens next!

Homebrew rules

Any variant rules/house rules will be decided on during session 0.

Fair warning: Mothership tends to get dark, and there are several content warnings selected to give you some idea of what to expect. We will go over our lines and veils during session 0, but ahead of time, I can say this for certain: There will be no sexual violence shown in this game, and no violence towards children. Also, I like to imagine that even though the future of Mothership is dark, dystopic, and puts a mirror up to our own society's flaws, the humans of the future will have evolved past any bigotry related to gender identity, sexuality, or race. (I also expect all players in the game to be similarly evolved and treat one another with respect and kindness as fellow human beings.)
