About Marius

I've been playing RPGs regularly for about twenty years, most of the time being the GM of my group, in a variety of systems and genres. My personal favorites tend to be sci-fi, horror, and dark fantasy settings, but I love trying new RPGs and settings. I'm a teacher by profession, and love introducing games to new players, making sure they have a good experience with them. I've ran many campaigns online, primarily D&D 5e and Pathfinder 1e and 2e, both pre-written campaigns and homebrew adventures. At GenCon 2025, I ran a table in the largest-ever game of Mothership, hosted by the Panic Table, and received great feedback from my players at the end of the event. I've completed several 5e adventures, some for multiple groups, including Lost Mine of Phandelver, Storm King's Thunder, Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, Curse of Strahd and Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden. I enjoy taking these pre-made adventures and campaigns, adapting them to my players and their interests. I want everyone to feel safe, included, and respected in my games. To ensure that happens, I make a rule to always start with a good session zero to set expectations and establish boundaries. I want to keep my games and servers free from talk of real-world politics and religion, and any hateful speech will not be tolerated.

I became a GM because

I love crafting stories for my players to enjoy, learning what aspects of the game resonate with the group and then focusing on those aspects to make sure everyone stays invested and has a great time!

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

Mothership - my new favorite game, the absolute best system for ramping up tension in a horror game I've ever played. Daggerheart - while it's new, and I haven't had a chance to run it yet, this ticks a lot of my boxes for fantasy RPGs. Delta Green - because [REDACTED].

When I'm not running games I'm...

currently wrapping up my third year as an assistant principal, before going back to a teaching position starting in August. I've missed the classroom, teaching is a lot more fun than administration and paperwork. I enjoy teaching players new RPGs, so there is some cross-over between work and play!

How Marius runs games

I prefer a more light-hearted tone unless we're specifically playing a game that is bleak and dark, and enjoy a joking, fun atmosphere, both out of and in character. I enjoy sessions full of roleplay, mixed with the occasional combat encounter to mix things up - I usually favor theater of the mind when it comes to combat, except when playing games with a strong tactical combat system like Pathfinder 2e.

I deal with rules issues by...

quickly searching the rules/SRD for relevant keywords, but if it takes more than thirty seconds to find, I prefer to make a ruling based on what makes sense to me, then look it up after the session to avoid too much downtime mid-game.

I prep by

keeping and maintaining a "campaign bible" for each campaign with information about the characters, session notes for previous sessions, ideas for the next session I've come up with during the week, and pictures for inspiration.

My favorite trope is...

fallen angels and redeemed devils, playing with players' expectations about characters they meet. Also: "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!" "Har har har! Mine is an evil laugh! Now die!"

Marius's ideal table

I like to compare the ideal table as an ensemble cast where everyone feels important, everyone has a chance to contribute, everyone gets their moments to shine. Players are happy to take a step back to allow someone else the center stage for a scene that fits their character, rather than feel the need to always be the center of attention. And the GM's job is to make sure every character gets their moment in the sun, make sure there are roleplaying opportunities / puzzles / combat encounters made to showcase the strengths of the various members of the party.

I love it when a player

tells me - either directly or by their actions in the game - what parts of the story they are enjoying and want to see more of. Even when running pre-made modules, I'm always looking for possible changes to suit my current group of players better, and your feedback is key to this!

I think metagaming...

makes the game less interesting for everyone. It's okay to let your character make what you as the player knows is a mistake because it makes sense to the character. A story with only successes and no failures is boring.

My table is not the place for...

If you have problems with the LGBTQ+ community or its representation in fictional media like RPGs, this is not the table for you. I'm happy to play with players from all walks of life, from conservatives to communists, religious or atheists, so long as they can be respectful and kind to everyone.
