About the adventure
Welcome to players new and veteran alike — this is a game for fans of the dark, dangerous, gritty fantasy world of The Witcher. Across the Continent, wars are waged and the number of witchers wanes, which welcomes a huge problem: Monsters are back in full force. But tension and conflict arise from what lurks in the shadows, as well as in the darkness between people as well. Discovery, supernatural forces, investigation, politics, and interpersonal relationships create a gray spectrum of outcomes, and even with the best of these, you may still find yourself on the wrong end of a sword or axe. Get to know the people traveling with you. Think through problems before diving in, sword-in-hand. Keep track of your resources. Ask questions, do careful exploration, and be prepared. Do all that, and you might just survive! We will start with an adventure from the first sourcebook and go from there. All in all, we're here to have a good time and see who you become in the world of The Witcher!

About me
Hi! I'm David, a film producer and story analyst by day, game master by night. I'm a sucker for fantasy, sci-fi, and horror in various flavors, and I love to geek out over new sourcebooks within universes that fascinate me. I'm also certified as a coffee master, so feel free to talk to me about your favorite caffeinated beverage!

Creating your character
We will create our characters during the first session, and depending on our progress, begin the first adventure during that same time slot. The Witcher provides a free "Easy Mode" abridged sourcebook which I will link for players once they've joined the game here on SPG. I will also walk everyone through the main sourcebook character creation process during Session Zero using my purchased books. I will send fillable PDFs of the relevant character sheet alongside the link to the free abridged sourcebook. You may also print those sheets and fill them manually when we work together on the Session Zero.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Once you have joined the campaign, please ensure you have the following: - Discord (browser-based or app) — Create an account for free if you don't already have one. - Internet-enabled device — Computer, phone, or other device you can use with Discord for calls. - Web camera or camera-enabled device — It's not required, but roleplaying is always better when we can see each other's expressions. - Microphone and speakers/headphones — You need to hear me, and I need to hear you. - Physical dice OR digital dice — At least 2 d10 and a few d6 on hand is good. If you don't have physical dice, there are free dice roller programs online I can share with you. - Pen and paper OR note-taking program — You'll need it for some of the roleplaying details that come up from session to session. Once you have a Discord account, provide me with the username so I can add you to a server for the campaign. This server will be home for you and the other players of the game to share character stories, get updates from me, and join in the voice channel where we will play our sessions each time.
What DavidTheGinger brings to the table
I'm excited to say I am always up for some improvisation, so your ideas are actually something I look forward to hearing as we play. But in addition to being great at the "Yes, and" strategy, I can also provide a bit more in-game. I run games in the "theater of the mind" style primarily, with an emphasis on description and character cues. I often provide character voices, and I'm running the game Rules as Written for the most part, but soon you'll see how much I love the "Rule of Cool" as well. I am a thinking partner with my players, but I also like giving them challenges that feel threatening. Most of all, though, I am a storyteller. I bring in characters whose lives might even be tied to yours, and it's up to you to decide how those lives get touched. No matter what happens at the table, I do my best to make people excited, interested, or emotionally moved. But I always do that while making sure my players are respected all the way around, each and every one. Also, every now and then I try some new tools to see what I can adopt full-time. We can talk about what styles and tools excite you later on, too!

How DavidTheGinger creates a safe table
I start things off the first day by getting to know what kind of game we want. There are players who expect a certain tone, and The Witcher is certainly a game with a lot of topics that need a bit of a warning. Sitting down at the beginning and agreeing on what topics are an absolute "no" — lines we won't cross, or things we won't show — is an important step for our Session Zero, alongside the whole "What kind of character do you wanna be?" conversation. Once we've had that conversation and documented the things we need to avoid, I will have a way to review and alter any game materials that pertain to those issues. We are telling a story together, and that requires people at the table to be on the same page for it to be enjoyable and meaningful. That said, you have an Open Door with me — I welcome you to leave and return to the table at any time to protect your own personal comfort level and sense of safety in whatever case. Mental health and wellbeing comes first, always. In a short session, such as 3 hours, we will plan to take a 15-minute "water break" or "bio break" sometime after the first hour and a half. You can always take a little longer as needed, or the group can agree to a longer break if that's something everyone feels would benefit them. In sessions over 4 hours, multiple breaks will be planned depending on group consensus. Again, life happens and breaks are necessary for our brains and our bodies. Just communicate when you need the time, and I will always be happy to accommodate the group accordingly.
