About the adventure
EARTH-69672 TIMELINE 1941 - Steve Rogers becomes Captain America. 1945 - Captain America goes into the ice, Bucky Barnes apparently dies. 2011 - Reed Richards, a pioneer in private space flight, launches his experimental spacecraft with himself, his fiancée Susan Storm and her brother Johnathan, and pilot Benjamin Grimm aboard. An unexpected wave of cosmic rays derails the flight and alters the biology of the four crew members in unexpected ways. 2012 - Henry Pym develops his shrinking formula and eventually becomes Ant-Man, soon joined by Janet Van Dyne as the Wasp. Peter Parker is bitten by an irradiated spider and becomes Spider-Man. Dr. Bruce Banner is exposed to a tremendous dose of gamma radiation and becomes the Hulk. Dr. Donald Blake discovers the enchanted hammer Mjolnir and realizes his true identity as Thor, the God of Thunder. 2013 - Arms manufacturer Tony Stark is wounded and imprisoned by terrorists in Afghanistan. With the aid of Professor Yinsen, he constructs an armored suit with which to escape his captors. Jean Grey arrives at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. She is given the code name ‘Marvel Girl’ and joins Xavier’s team of student adventurers known as the ‘X-Men’. Her compatriots are Henry ‘Hank’ McCoy (Beast), Scott ‘Slim’ Summers (Cyclops), Warren Worthington III (Angel), and Robert ‘Bobby’ Drake (Iceman). Soon after, the X-Men foil the plans of the mutant terrorist known Magneto to capture the Cape Citadel ballistic missile launch facility. The God of Mischief, Loki, attempts to exact revenge upon his brother Thor. Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man, and the Wasp thwart Loki’s plan and the group elects to associate on an ongoing basis as the Avengers, a team powerful enough to fight the battles no one being could fight alone. 2014 - The Avengers discover Steve Rogers in the ice. Captain America swiftly becomes a member of the team. 2019 - After the X-Men are lost on the isle of Krakoa, Cyclops alone returns to Xavier’s school. Xavier gathers a new team of mutants to rescue their predecessors: Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Thunderbird, Banshee, Sunfire, and Wolverine. 2026 - Face front, True Believers! A lot has happened in the last seven years. Probably every pertinent event you can think of has happened to your favorite heroes, but we’re probably gonna leave the details aside. What’s important is that we have a thoroughly modern version of the Marvel Universe where every hero and villain is in their most iconic incarnation from across the decades, filtered through a bit of an MCU aesthetic, and variously acknowledging or ignoring aspects of classic continuity as we see fit. Our stories will see both iconic Marvel heroes and new original characters fighting alongside (or AS) either Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man or The Ever-Lovin’ Blue-Eyed Thing (essayed by players or appearing as NPC allies) against the most dastardly supervillains, monsters, and aliens ever conceived! EXCELSIOR!

About me
I’m a lifelong tabletop RPG enthusiast and GM, with over thirty years’ experience. I got my start with the good old red box (BECMI) D&D, and it's all kinda snowballed from there. I’ve been running what amounts to the same Star Wars RPG campaign for much of that time, through numerous systems and/or iterations of systems. I’ve run and enjoyed many many other games - I love to learn a new system - and tend toward SF and superhero genres. I’m also a fan generally of comics and science fiction, an incorrigible reader, an aspiring writer, and a student of Zen. The table I’d want to run would be inclusive and welcoming, with a strong focus on collaboration and storytelling. I generally aim to create opportunities for heroes to shine in big cinematic moments, but also for roleplaying, emotional beats, and character development. A bit of humor will tend to creep in as well. At the end of the day, I take great enjoyment and fulfillment from helping my players have a great time. I like to put in the homework on worldbuilding, creating an immersive experience. At the end of the day, the Game is what matters, and everything I do as a GM is in service of that.

Creating your character
We’ll work this out in Session 0 and/or as needed when new players join. Character creation will align with Rules As Written.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Although the particulars are open to negotiation, the basic idea is to play via Discord in a Theater Of The Mind format.
What Gregory Sheets brings to the table
Anything goes! My main imperative is to facilitate a fun game for the players. In keeping with the tone of the ruleset and the setting, expect big cinematic super hero adventures - with perhaps some of the breezy comedy and character drama/angst you’d expect from a Marvel comic, film, or TV show. Rule Of Cool and lots of fun rule the day. I love roleplaying. So if you want to play an existing Marvel character, I hope you’ll be prepared/willing to embody that role. If you want to create a wholly original character, I hope you’ll want to build and develop them into a three-dimensional person. My basic idea for this game is a little bit of a West Marches concept crossed with a monthly team-up comic book. The overall direction could conceivably change, but the idea is that players might rotate in and out according to availability, and be free to play a given character on an ongoing basis or change things up at will. True to the comic titles that inspired this game, Spider-Man or the Thing will be there to team up with. If a player wants to have a go at one of those two, cool; if not, they’ll be there as an NPC to help guide and support the players but never to overshadow them. It could evolve into a more focused ongoing campaign with consistent characters (which could maybe even spin off into its own “team book” campaign) or it could remain a light, loose, freewheeling affair open to all comers once every week or two. Sky’s the limit, True Believers!

How Gregory Sheets creates a safe table
I plan to do a Session 0, and work out a Lines and Veils document. X-cards are welcome by any available or comfortable means and will of course be respected without question. I love feedback, so Stars and Wishes are welcome and encouraged. I’m aiming for a PG-13 kinda zone here. I want to capture the tone of Marvel comics, films, TV, animation, etc., so I do not intend to create or enable content that goes beyond those boundaries. I mean, the Punisher might shoot at bad guys; Wolverine has sharp claws that could cause some wounds; the Hulk can raze entire buildings. I don’t mean to lean in those directions and I won’t dwell on them or go into graphic details. Unless a player states a specific intent to kill, which is not really encouraged, the default is for bad guys to be “knocked out” or otherwise incapacitated without gore or lasting harm. Fun is the rule of the day.
