About the adventure

The Witchlight Carnival arrives only once every eight years, bringing shimmering lights, impossible wonders, and fey magic that hums beneath every laugh and lantern. For most, it’s a night of joy and spectacle. For you, it’s the beginning of something far stranger. Behind the bright colours and smiling faces lies a world of secrets, bargains, and beings who do not think—or play—like mortals do. This campaign invites players into an unpredictable adventure where the boundary between the mundane world and the Feywild grows thin. You’ll explore enchanted attractions, meet eccentric carnival folk, and uncover the truth behind the strange happenings that ripple through the carnivals core. Every choice matters in the Feywild, where emotions shape reality, promises carry power, and even the smallest kindness or misstep can echo across realms. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or brand new to D&D, this game is designed to be welcoming, imaginative, and character‑driven. Expect a blend of light hearted fun, heartfelt moments, and the occasional eerie twist. Combat is present but not the focus; creativity, roleplay, and clever problem‑solving shine brightest here. If you enjoy stories full of wonder, mystery, and memorable NPCs, this is the game for you! Your characters will begin at Level 1 and grow through exploration, choices, and the relationships they forge. The campaign encourages personal character arcs—especially those tied to lost things, forgotten memories, or unfinished business. The Witchlight Carnival remembers everyone who walks through its gates, and the Feywild has a way of returning what was lost… though never quite in the way you expect. As your GM, I bring a warm, collaborative style to the table. Expect vibrant character voices, atmospheric music, and a focus on player agency. I embrace the Rule of Cool when it enhances the story, and I ensure everyone feels safe, supported, and excited to play. Session 0 will cover expectations, boundaries, and character creation so you can step confidently into the adventure. If you’re ready to chase mysteries, bargain with fey, outwit tricksters, and explore a realm where imagination becomes reality, then step right up. The carnival is open, the lights are glowing, and your story is waiting to begin.

About me

Do you like Dungeons and Dragons 5e? Do you like playing in a unique setting with surprises around almost every turn? (Gotta keep you on your toes somehow!) Do you want Adventure, Mystery and Excitement? Then consider signing up for a campaign with me, Andy, I will run different games as advertised, a unique adventure based in my homebrewed world of "Astaria", with a story developed with your characters in mind for a fully immersive experience that you can really be a part of of. Or, if modular is more your style, I will also set up modular games starting with Strixhaven: Curriculum of Chaos! I have experience with running this module and it was a whole lot of fun which I would love to share with a new party of magic wielding students! A bit about me! Hi! My names Andy, I've been playing D&D 5e for the last 10+ years and a Dungeon Master for the last 7. My longest running Campaign spanning 3 years which had my players coming back each and every session. I have ran a range of games ranging from horror, romance, thriller, festive and many more. I look for ways to bring laughter and fun to each game whilst also allowing that creativity to flow in a safe space. During the session 0, any boundaries will be addressed as well as procedures of what to do if boundaries are pushed. I welcome all manner of players to my games and promote for inclusivity. Character creation

Creating your character

Are you new to Dungeons and Dragons? If so, once you've signed up to the campaign, drop me a message and we can go through how best to set up the character you want to play! Already familiar with character creation? The world is your oyster! This campaign is bringing together characters who are visiting the carnival, it may be that they found a flyer and were intrigued, met some interesting character who invited them, maybe they have visited the carnival before and have some unresolved conquest which brings them back to the bright lights and frivolity! You may even already work at the carnival and want to take the witchlight hand background to add another level of creativity to the story. There is no strict rules on character creation in terms of build. For backstory, we will be following the "Lost Things" hook, so when creating your character, have them think about a situation from their childhood - they may have snuck into the carnival without a ticket (this is the guidance in the book) and during that visit had a personal item which they care about go missing which they suspect is linked to the carnival or feywild. Maybe, they came across a suspicious character who was dressed in carnival attire who took the item from them with a promise to return it should they find their way to the carnival? - feel free to get creative with the item and how they lost it provided it has some tie to the carnival/feywild. All 1801adventures are ultimately hosted in my own homebrew world of "Astaria", so if your character comes from a specific environment such as a city, village, tribe - deep mountain dwarven settlement (yes, I've had that one!), then let me know and I'll find the best suited start location to fit with your character. During the session 0 - if characters want to have interacted before hand and have already established links, then this can be sorted, and you will all have access to the discord to discuss character links ahead of time. Once you have joined the campaign, I will provide a Dndbeyond link to the campaign and you can assign your character. Once assigned you will have shared access to all of my dndbeyond resources, if there is something specific let me know and I will acquire it for you.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

To prepare to join the campaign you will need the following: - Dndbeyond Account - Discord Account - A good quality microphone - Stable internet connection You will not require any downloads for foundry as this will be accessed via a URL at the point the game is active.

What Andy G brings to the table

As your GM, I will provide anything of which you need to ensure that you have the best possible experience. You will have access to a fully modernised Foundry VTT server which promotes fluid gameplay, uses in built audio for background ambience and battle music, imported character sheets so everything you need will be accessible inside the foundry game and access to the 1801adventures discord server where you can connect with other players in your campaign as well as other players who play with 1801adventures if you want to network! During the game I will provide immersive descriptions of scenes, character voices and look to find ways to ensure your character is not just living in the story but they are writing it too. Whilst I will always endeavour to play Rules as Written when it comes to rulings, I encourage creativity and out the box thinking, so if your character wants to do something awesome! Rule of cool will come into play! I will respect any triggers or areas of sensitivity which you have and ensure that they are not captured within the game narrative and will not discriminate against anyone regardless of race/belief/sexuality/any other characteristics to ensure a welcoming and safe environment, sensitive themes are also avoided.

Safety

How Andy G creates a safe table

Safety is of the utmost importance within the 1801adventures games and with this in mind we have multiple systems in place to ensure that the best experience is possible. Breaks - There will always be a short 10-15 minute break around 1/2 time of the session. X, N, O Digital Cards - These are used to let the DM know about personal limits which you are experiencing, if the narrative is crossing a personal boundary or you are finding the topic triggering send an "X" via direct message in discord or as a whisper in foundry and I will stop the line of roleplay immediately and retcon to a safe topic. If you fear that the topic could lead to a trigger but has not crossed that line please direct message or whisper an "N", this notifies me that I can continue with the line of roleplay but to tread carefully. If a session is particularly intense, perhaps there has been a character death or something which is felt deeply by both character and player, I will send an "O" which is a quick way for me to check in and ask "are you okay?" - the use of these cards requires no explanation or justification. Session 0 - During the session 0, we will discuss character backgrounds and positioning within the home world and how they come to be in the location of the carnival. We will cover any hard boundary's which need to be avoided from the beginning and I will cover my server and game rules. Safety Tools within Discord - Within the discord server if there is any behaviour which I as the DM deem to be out of line, there will be a written warning, if the behaviour continues, you will be placed in a timeout area within the discord which will have no access to any of the other resources/channels where we will discuss the behaviour and agree resolution, if there is no resolution, I reserve the right to remove any player I deem to be a risk/offensive or discriminatory from my games and discord server with no refund given for the session in question. Stars and Wishes - I welcome all feedback regardless of if that is related to the games content, foundryVTT Server or how sessions are played/DM'd - feel free to send Stars for what you think went well and Wishes for things you wish to see included or improved.
