About the adventure

The Moon of Ill Omen shines, red and bright. 🔴 Legends forgotten will soon come to light. 🌟 When a Vestige of Divergence, a divine remnant of the Calamity, is uncovered at a small town festival, two groups of adventurers will find their lives changed forever. This journey will test your might, wits, and courage as you encounter the demonic forces in Xhorhas, the scheming factions in the prosperous oasis city of Ank'Harel, and the malevolent abominations from the Netherdeep. Along the way you may clash or cooperate with a group of rivals whose path has entangled with yours! Destiny is calling - will you answer it? This is a 5e campaign for 3-6 adventurers and will span from level 3 to 13, or perhaps beyond. Much of the campaign will be theater of the mind, with tactical maps for explorations and combats. This is a tale of grand adventure, dark tragedy, and meaningful choices.

About me

(he/him) Salutations! My name is Joshua, and I facilitate cooperative storytelling experiences. I have been GMing for 27 years with nearly 10,000 hours at the table behind the GM screen. Home games, con games, Short games, and long games. Simple, mysterious, Silly, or serious; I've run them. I believe that RPGs should be a safe playground where players can explore identities and ideas while feeling welcome and empowered. I design and facilitate my campaigns to center the player characters, weaving them into the world and building it up around them. My favorite genre is fractured fairy tales and fresh retellings of classic stories.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will discuss character ideas and the party's backstory during Session 0. Please send your character sheet to me at least 24 hours before the Session 1 for approval. I am available to talk through character creation ahead of time, and can provide a pre-generated character upon request. Player characters are 3rd level with starting equipment. Use the Standard Array or 27 Point Buy for ability scores. Any first-party published material is available for use. Third-party, homebrew and customization will be allowed, subject to review.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A microphone is required to participate. A webcam is encouraged, but not necessary. I will have my camera on, and I'd love to see you too! We will be using Discord and Roll20 to play, so you will need (free) accounts for both of them. You might want to download the Discord client as well. Dice and character sheets will be handled within Roll20. You will be expected to have access to any source books or other content your character is built using unless you are using a pre-generated character.

What Joshua brings to the table

As GM, I will provide the adventure itself, including maps and tokens. I can provide pre-generated characters on request. Dice rolling may be handled through Roll20 or with physical dice.

Safety

How Joshua creates a safe table

Call of the Netherdeep is a story about both heroism and tragedy. This game will contain elements of trauma, body horror, emotional manipulation, animal violence, self harm, and peril comparable to a PG-13 rated film. Please let me know if there are additional things I need to be aware of to maintain your comfort and safety. Racism, transphobia, ableism, and all other discrimination will not be tolerated.
