About the adventure

Curse of Strahd: The Mists Are Waiting (5.5e) The gates of Barovia swing open around Halloween — and they only open one way. We're wrapping up our current campaign now, so you can claim your seat before the mists close. Some villains are obstacles. Strahd von Zarovich is a presence. Consistently ranked the greatest D&D adventure ever published, Curse of Strahd traps your party in Barovia, a gothic realm sealed behind walls of mist and ruled by a vampire who has had centuries to perfect his cruelty. He isn’t waiting at the end of a dungeon. He’s watching you from the first session — testing you, toying with you, inviting you to dinner. This is horror the way it’s meant to be played: dread that builds, allies you can’t quite trust, and a land where every victory costs something. The Tarokka reading at the start of the campaign reshuffles the story’s key secrets, so no two runs of Barovia are ever the same — not even mine. Your Dungeon Master Robert J Defendi brings 43 years of table-tested GM experience to Barovia's fog-drowned roads — and a connection to this story few Dungeon Masters alive can claim. Robert knows Tracy and Laura Hickman, the creators of Strahd, personally — and he has run every version of their masterpiece since the original Ravenloft first hit shelves in 1983. Four decades of guiding players through Castle Ravenloft mean a Strahd who has never once played the same way twice. The campaign runs in a fully prepared Foundry VTT environment: dynamic lighting, immersive maps of Castle Ravenloft, and atmosphere thick enough to cut. What to Expect 🦇 Gothic horror done right — dread and atmosphere over cheap jump scares 🎭 A villain who knows your name — Strahd is an active, intelligent presence throughout 🃏 A story that reshuffles itself — the Tarokka reading makes every campaign unique 🧠 Meaningful choices — who you trust and who you save will shape Barovia's fate 🎲 A DM who's run Ravenloft since 1983 — and knows its creators personally Whether you’re a horror devotee or a player who’s always wanted to face the legend himself, you’ll find a welcoming table on the far side of the mists. Can’t Wait Until Halloween? You don’t have to. Our current campaign — Classic D&D Reborn: Pharaoh & White Plume Mountain — is episodic, with the same seats open. Join now, adventure with the group through the classics that defined D&D and walk into Barovia this fall with a party you already trust at your back. (You’ll want them there.) https://startplaying.games/adventure/cmm4iyzfa00r1l4040r5lzi0n?cadence=CAMPAIGN&est=12.00&lst=17.59&q=white+plume The wolves are howling. The castle lights are burning. The Master of Ravenloft is having guests for dinner... and you are invited. ✨ Enter the mists. If you dare.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will make characters on D&D Beyond and import them into Foundry. The characters are 1st level, and I'll be using 2024 rules. If you want a legacy race or subclass that hasn't been updated, run it by me. I'll likely say yes.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Join our discord. You will need a mic, an internet connection and a computer powerful enough to run Foundry VTT.

What Robert brings to the table

I will bring the immersive storytelling and 43 years of GMing experience. Of course, I provide the Foundry server and the adventure itself.

Homebrew rules

I tend to assume that 20s are always successes and 1s are always failures.
