About the adventure

GET INTO CHARACTER is a single session where you'll create a new, Level 1 D&D character you're excited to play in your next campaign! Whether you've created a player character before or not, I'll take the whole group through the process step-by-step: providing the materials, info, motivation, accountability, and friendly socializing to get you going! You can then take your character with you anywhere you'd like! I'd LOVE for you to bring your new character either to my All-Ages 'Save Themberchaud' campaign -- an adventure centering my favorite chonky-boy dragon which borrows, then diverges from the 5E adventure, "Out of the Abyss," or to my 18+ 'Mysteries of Candlekeep' campaign -- my homebrewed version of D&D's 'Candlekeep Mysteries' anthology. About me

My name is Teresa, and I'm the Founder of Pomonok Entertainment, a production company through which I create games under Pomonok Games. I've been playing tabletop role-playing games for close to 15 years, and started GM-ing about 2 years ago. I'm most familiar with D&D 5e, and I also love running smaller TTRPGs like DIALECT, ALICE IS MISSING, and SIGNAL TO NOISE. I've also been a professional GM for kids, working as a 'Quest Master' for a company called The Hero's Quest (https://www.jointheherosquest.com/) based in Glendale, CA, which provides an after-school program to public schools in the area where kids can learn social skills and emotional regulation/intelligence through specially-written D&D campaigns. So, I'm absolutely comfortable with players as young as 9 years old at my table! I'm looking not only to run games I've already played and know, but to use StartPlaying as an opportunity to bust out games/systems I haven't yet run, but want to try! Specifically games like KIDS ON BIKES or TRAVELER. I'm not really a swords & sorcery kind of girl - D&D is a huge exception! I love games set in sci-fi, urban fantasy/supernatural, dystopian, or post-apocalyptic settings.

Character creation

Creating your character

You'll be creating your new, Level 1 character along with me and other players right in this very session!

The current party

This workshop is open to all players Ages 10+ and at all levels of D&D experience. This single session is purely about creating your character, but if there's time (and if any players want to), I'll run a short encounter so that you can have some practice getting your new characters on their feet before you take them out into the world (or into one of my campaigns)!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Come to this session with an idea of what kind of character you want to play. If you have no idea what species or class you want to be -- THAT'S OKAY -- but come to the session with an idea of what kind of person/player you want to be, and the kind of experience you want to have. ** Do you want to be a fighter, a healer, an entertainer, a thief...? ** Do you want to be human, or one of the Forgotten Realms' many other species? ** Do you want to use magic a lot, or would you rather deal with the world in a more hands-on way? ** Is it more important to you to be smart, charming, or physically powerful? ** Do you want to talk your way out of problems, sneak/scheme your way out of them, or punch your problems in the face? and lastly... ** Do you want your character to have some romance? (and would you be comfortable romancing a fellow player's character, or would you prefer to romance an NPC -- a "non-player character" played by me?) You don't have to be firmly decided on any of it, but give it some thought before this session.

What Teresa Jusino brings to the table

The "RP" of TTRPG are my favorite letters! I LOVE when players create characters they actually want to play with enthusiasm. Part of that is really digging into your character's life, history, class, job, circumstances, and personality, creating a person you WANT to hang with for hours at a time. I'll be providing the materials you need to get started, including PDFs of: -- character sheets -- info on species and classes -- weapon/equipment information, and -- other information about the D&D Forgotten Realms setting that might be relevant to your character-building (like, say, info on religion for Clerics or Paladins, info on certain factions for Rangers or Druids, etc). By talking it through with me and other players creating characters alongside you, you should have an awesome, Level 1 character that you're excited to bring to your next D&D campaign by the end of this session.

Homebrew rules

If I really love the character you create in this session, and you join either my 'Save Themberchaud' campaign or my "Mysteries of Candlekeep" campaign, I will start your character off with Inspiration* in the first session! What will make me "really love" a character? Well, it's kinda like when you're the judge in 'Apples to Apples' -- like, you don't know in advance the kind of thing that's gonna tickle your fancy, but when you see it and it hits...it just hits. So, hit me with your best character! *for those who don't know, "Inspiration" is a single-use bonus a DM will give a player -- basically a coupon for "advantage on one ability check, attack, or saving throw" that you can hold onto and redeem at any time OR give to a party member to use if they need it.

Safety

How Teresa Jusino creates a safe table

During this session, we won't be engaging with D&D's content as players, so there won't be a situation where you are immersed in a story that could go in a certain direction. However, I will start the session by going over expectations about how the group will work together and interact with each other during the workshop. Then, I'll do a brief run-down on things like why I use the word "species" instead of "races" the way the published 5E books do, as well as talk a bit about areas of character creation (like backstory, bonds, religious history, or magic for spellcasters) that could lead to things that might warrant a content warning during game sessions to make you aware of them -- especially if you're a first-time/new player. And lastly, ANYONE in this session is free to send me a private message in the Discord chat to let me know if something is hitting the wrong way and needs to be addressed. Player safety and players respecting me and each other at my table are huge priorities for me, so never be afraid to let me know if things aren't feeling okay for you. I will do my best to address your concerns in the moment as they happen, or tell you immediately in the chat what my plan is for addressing it in future.
