About the adventure

At the oldest and most prestigious magical university in the world, the motto is that magic is a service to the community, and as such many of the students are expected to help others and not simply slave away over books and cram for the next potion brewing exam. Don't worry though, that happens as well, but between lessons, you will uncover secret conspiracies and face many dangerous enemies. You will need to investigate mysterious gremlin infestations and fend off strange attacks by giant insects till you eventually have a chance to learn the fate of the mystical founder of the school itself, who vanished thousands of years ago. The game takes place in the Mwangi Expanse, which is heavily inspired by African culture and makes it distinct from the usual euro-centric medieval flavor most fantasy adventures present, giving it its own, unique flair. Over the course of the characters' entire academic careers, which will easily take years or even decades, they will grow from new students who can barely cast a cantrip, to teachers at the school by the midway point of the campaign, educating the next generation of students. But that is by no means the end of their stories, as previously seemingly unconnected threats reveal something that threatens the entire world. This campaign covers the full leveling experience starting at the humble level 1 and taking you all the way to the height of power at level 20! It focuses a lot more on role-play and interacting with the other students and teachers, as well as the citizens of the Mwangi Expanse, than some of the other Adventure Paths. That does not mean there won't be combat, there is, and it is often a valid solution to the problem at hand. But it is rarely the only path forward. This game is taking place at a magic academy, but even non-spellcasters will find a place here. Classes that are not traditionally spellcasters, like fighters and rogues, will be able to study spells if they so choose (completely up to the player), to supplement their roles. This happens through the Free Archetype optional rule (see below for more info on this). They also all have a place within the school itself, be it as bodyguards, spies or scholars. 🚫 What this game is NOT 🚫 * Unlike a different magical school, this one is not for children. The characters are adults (albeit young adults are fine), and the school is more a university than a boarding school. * The focus is not on grades and coursework. Those exist of course, but more to set the flavor of the campaign. ✅ What the game IS ✅ * Found-family dynamics play a big role. Your classmates become your party for potentially decades. * Social interactions with teachers and other students either friendly or rivals are a large part. * This game allows for non-traditional builds, like the above-mentioned Fighter learning spells. But also all kinds of unusual Ancestries, from simply undead ones to artificial, are welcome as long as they abide by the school's rules.

About me

Hello! I'm Florian, a Game Master based in Germany. I discovered tabletop RPGs a little later than most - around the age of 30 - but for the past 15 years, they've been a huge part of my life. Whether I'm behind the screen or rolling dice as a player, I love diving into new systems and crafting memorable stories. I got my start with Pathfinder right when 1st Edition launched, and I've been hooked ever since. While I never really played much D&D, Pathfinder 2e has become my favorite system to run these days. I also have experience running Vampire: The Masquerade and Shadowrun, and I've dabbled in many other games as a player. What I love the most about TTRPGs is the collaborative nature of it, where we all tell a story together.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create the characters together in the Session 0. Don't worry, despite everything you heard it's a fairly easy process and I will guide you through it. You may have heard horror stories about how difficult Pathfinder 2e is, but its actually very straight-forward and its very hard to screw up. While you would assume that for a Magic Academy game you can only play Wizards and other spellcasters, that is far from true! EVERY class has a place here and even Fighters or Barbarians can learn the basics of magic! The game starts at level 1 and you will reach level 20 by the end.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

🎤 A working microphone 🌐 A stable internet connection and an internet browser (like Edge or Chrome) 💬 A free Discord account (I can help set one up if needed) 🎧 (Optional) Headphones are highly recommended to avoid any echo. If you're using speakers, you'll need to set up "Push to talk" (we can do that together) 📷 (Optional) A webcam. I'll use one, as it helps me communicate, but no pressure.

What Florian the GM brings to the table

I'll provide access to the Foundry VTT and Discord Server that's being used for the game. The Foundry VTT handles the math and bookkeeping automatically, so you can focus on the roleplay and immerse yourself in the world. I'll provide music for ambiance.

Homebrew rules

We'll be using the "Free Archetype" variant rule from the GM Core, which is recommended for this AP. This gives you access to features of other classes or completely new abilities without taking anything away from your main class. You don't need to know how this works, it will all be explained when the time comes. Other house rules can be discussed in Session 0 or at any point during the game.

Safety

How Florian the GM creates a safe table

We will start the campaign with a Session 0. Those unfamiliar with the term, that is where we’ll go over expectations that everyone has for the game as well as the safety tools that are being used. Afterwards we’ll work together on forming a coherent party and create your characters. Lines and Veils will be handled via the Monte Cook RPG Consent Sheet, which covers many "common" limits already and allows everyone to add their own as well. During gameplay you can always indicate with the X-Card that you're not comfortable with a certain topic and it will be avoided, no questions asked. This is handled through a Foundry VTT module. Don't be shy to use it if needed. After the game everyone can share their thoughts on the game, as well as post them in the Stars and Wishes channel on Discord.
