About the adventure

Hell is for anyone and everyone, this includes the undead, vampiric, witchy, and worst of all: fiendish. The muddy moralities that now inhabit the mortal world remain coredial thanks to a suprisinging benevolent but iron rule in the capital of Hell: New Avernus. Ironically, the only people not welcome in New Avernus are the celestials who are scourged with a righteous fury against the impure. After the procurement of the necessary recources to repeatedly bring mortals back from the dead, there seems to have been a side effect: once one begins the seventh or eigth lifetime, undead characteristics start to appear. That is, if one is lucky enough to not already be ensnared by a fiend, gourged on by a vampire, or annexed into a witch's coven. Players are invited to engage with the setting by adding some sort of immortality to their backstory, whether that is a return from the dead or the membership of a race that does not die. But I know that many players are attached to their original characters so any adjustement can be made on my end. I run a player focused game, a collaborative effort to tell a story that has a bit of all of us within it. D&D has many strengths: the creativity and flexibility of a human mind to run a game rather than the unshifting rules of a video or board game as well as the ancient tradition of a collaborative story. Hellspawn is my own creation, locations and characters are written down, added and removed as I refine the story. I've run the campaign several times and it is unique every time because different people have different motives and are drawn to different aspects of the world. A large theme within the campaign is the idea of immortality and undeath. Character death is going to be treated differently than usual because the character can often be magically revived. However, this applies to the enemies you face as well. Combat is dynamic and story driven. Some encounters will be unwinnable by normal means while others will be easily; others still will put your game sense to the test with close calls and high stakes. Plot hooks are a plenty and all you need is a want for adventure. This campaign is open to all sorts of people, ideally 18+ unless there's a group of youngsters that want to learn the game together. If the story doesn't ensnare you, which I am confident it will, then there is no harm in choosing to continue your creative journey with another group, which is why I offer a free session zero.

About me

GM-ing requires creativity and resourcefulness. I've loved GM-ing for the past half decade and I've learned one important lesson about sharing a community story: everyone gets a voice. My professional experience with two published fantasy books is a good background, but in reality, TTRPGs are about the player as much as the DM. I foster communication and freeform creativity in my games in order to optimize the playing experience. That is to say, I utilize the standardized rules of 5e, 5.5e, and Call of Cthulu, in order to give a backbone to my players---because limitations foster creativity---but I also will never stop a player from adding the spice and personality that only a TTRPG can provide. The stats and the dice tell a story but the tone is set by you, community storytelling is a rich and ancient tradition and it is my honor and priviledge to partake in that legacy.

Character creation

Creating your character

You deserve to feel good in your own skin. You may create your own character with point buy or other similar balanced stats. I'll take a look at your stats and confirm if they are balanced for the game. You can have already made a character or make one in session zero. You can have as much or as little backstory as you desire all I ask is that you engage with the story in each session and roleplay enough to emerse yourself in the experience unique to D&D. I ask this because that is exactly what I am trying to offer and why I feel justified in sharing that service, I want to ensure that it is a high quality and worth your time experience. I encourage but not demand players to give their characters some form of immortality. Races such as Warforged are inherently immortal. Otherwise, you can create your character as usual and simply give them a modifier I have adjusted from the "reborn" and similar lineages that are available within the canon of D&D. My only hard rule would be that celestials are not playable in this campaign as it would be too disjointed from the storyline. I have an app that I use called "Fifth Edition Character Sheet," but other options exist and are typically legal in my games. Difficulty is determined by balance, I'm sorry to say, it is an illusion. If you min-max your character, that is make your character as powerful as possible, I will make the encounters more difficult. So feel free to min-max if that is your form of fun, I can balance it. Furthermore, do not feel afraid of making a character that does not preform well in combat. Combat can still be engaging with "bad" characters. Often, raw damage is the most boring way to win an encounter. I will alway encourage a "dump stat" or "mid stats" in order to give a unique and unforgettable personality to your play.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will be invited to a Discord server and given a role to be part of your campaign. The server will be organized and have a couple of tabs you can keep notes in or talk with your fellow players and me. You are always welcome to direct message me on Discord. I will also introduce some web based websites for anonymous messaging during campaigns.

What Samuel Seitz brings to the table

You can expect the rules to stand as a default but be adjusted in certain situations, perhaps as plot hooks or in order to make the story more interesting. Some level of rules are necessary to keep the story grounded and engaging. Always being spoonfed leads to stale D&D experiences; I will ask that you be creative and intelligent---in your own unique way---to do well in my campaign. There are multiple ways to be cool, sometimes a character who constantly loses fights can still be cool through determination and valor. Rule of cool will apply uniquely as I adjust to the expectations and enjoyment of the party. I will admit that I will sometimes adjust the difficulty of an encounter in the middle of it. However, I will avoid favoritism by applying some level of randomness. I will always count HP (even if I double it when I realize how overpowered you are) and I will give out magic items equally, maybe with a preference towards martials because they need them more. On the topic of magic items, there will be plenty and I tend to make them unique.

Homebrew rules

I adhere to some common homebrew or house rules such as bonus action potions and instant equiping gear in most situations. The settings are homebrew and many enemies will be modified or made up by me. Magic items will often be homebrewed unless I am giving them out as random loot. Homebrew is negotiable.

How Samuel Seitz creates a safe table

Players will be given a free session zero where questions and concerns will be answered. They will also be allowed to direct message me or ask a question as it naturally comes up. I will use anonymous web based message boards to give feedback to me about what I can do to make sure that you are getting the best possible experience. You come before the theme, I always want to make you feel safe and included. But I also invite you to go outside of your comfort zone and experience the complexities of storytelling even when the complexities leave you feeling sad for a moment. Storytelling is sublime and to be sublime one must have melancholy on occasion.
