About the adventure
Learn D&D by playing a student at a fantasy academy! You will play a level 1 character of any class you choose. While the core mechanics of character sheets will be pre-made, you will be able to choose your character’s name, race, gender, and personality. The session will exhibit all of D&D core mechanics: combat, skill checks, spells, class features, the importance of ability scores, and more.

About me
I've been GMing and playing ttrpgs at least weekly for the past 7 years. D&D 5th edition is where I spend the bulk of my time, but I've also played in/run other systems such as Shadowdark, Daggerheart, Nimble, Starfinder, etc. I've DM'd multi-year campaigns with a consistent group as well as brief community mini campaigns and one-shots with rotating players. My focus as a DM is on story, but I pride myself on encyclopedic rules knowledge (that I'm nonetheless willing to bend if it maximizes the fun at the table).

Creating your character
Character creation will occur in the first 30 minutes of the session. Players will be able to choose from 12 pre-made character sheets (one for each class) and then customize the character’s race, name, gender, and personality. The DM will provide documents and instructions for these steps. All aspects of the character sheets will be derived from the 2024 edition of the 5th edition Player’s Handbook.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Players should have a Discord account and a setup that provides working video and audio. The DM will provide a Discord server link, which will be used for the video call. Players will also need to be able to access google drive and/or have means of opening their character sheet document. Dice are a delight to roll, but if a player does not possess physical dice they are welcome to use digital dice (google “roll d20” to see what digital dice entail).
What Colten brings to the table
Players should expect a tight, detailed session with a series combat and non-combat challenges for their characters to overcome. Combat will likely be theater-of-the-mind (in which we simply imagine the scene), but if a situation arises in which it would be helpful, the DM will do a screen share of a battle map.

Safety
How Colten creates a safe table
During the character creation period we will discuss the concept of lines and veils and players will be invited to share theirs then, either openly or in private message to the DM. If at any point during the session a player has questions or feels uncomfortable, I welcome and encourage them to speak up. If they prefer not to, however, any mid-session concerns can be directly messaged to me.
