About the adventure
An Introductory Call of Cthulhu one-shot straight from the core rule book. Amidst the Ancient Trees is a spooky story where I will help you create your characters, and then send them into an intense one-shot adventure. Your investigators are in Vermont in 1926, and are part of a search party tasked with finding and rescuing the local big wig's daughter. After a botched random hand-off, some local thugs made off with the girl and the money. Now anyone's being offered a reward for finding and rescuing the girl. But there may be more than meets the eye. This adventure is a little more action oriented than most adventures run in the system, but it will still be run in a very grounded, realistic, and gritty style. That's not to say there's not room for levity, especially with character concepts, as long as you're ready for Jimbo the Clown to go mad and suffer horrible trauma, but generally this will be a game with grounded and realistic themes and topics, with a healthy amount of mythos horror.

About me
My name is Sam, I have a musical theater degree and a board game collection worth thousands of dollars. I have a passion for sharing things I love with people who have yet to experience them, teaching rules and sharing experiences. I've been running games since early high school after I played one disastrous game of D&D and all my online friends went "But you *played* D&D, so teach us!" and that's been about my position ever since! Since then I've run games in many systems, always excited to find what some systems will do better than others. D&D is alright, but I love teaching people what other systems have to offer. The narrative dice of the Genesys system, the sanity and realism of Call of Cthulhu, the zany character creation of Icons. Star Wars by Fantasy Flight and D&D are probably my strongest systems, but I'll learn and run any system at least once if anyone shows any interest.

Creating your character
I would love to get together with everyone prior to the game, either as a group or individually, and go through character creation. I'll guide through creating your characters and what motivations will be helpful. We'll be using the default rules for character creation, using the optional rules for optionally re-rolling your character if you have too low of stats.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
We'll play over Discord, so just have a discord account and I'll take it from there. You'll also need a mic and preferably a video camera, but the camera isn't required.
What Sam brings to the table
As the proud holder of a theater degree, I'll be doing voices for the characters to the best of my ability! I'll also be playing ambient music. If any combat occurs, it'll be theater of the mind. The game will be rules as written for the most part both to teach, and to keep the game dark and grounded. But of course, we're still playing, so come ready to have fun and enjoy yourself as well.
Homebrew rules
I don't have any established homebrew rules for Call of Cthulhu.

How Sam creates a safe table
I will ask everyone prior, whether in a session 0 if able to be arranged, or individually, for lines and veils in particular. While not marked down, if anyone wants to make X, N, and O cards and hold them up to the camera and/or type them in chat, I will certainly respect them. Otherwise, anyone is always welcome to stop the game and/or walk away, call for a break, whatever is necessary for comfort while I try my best to creep you out and horrify you for our collective enjoyment.
