About the adventure

πŸ“– This is an excellently written, diverse module that changes substantially as you advance the story. Beyond simply increasing danger, the setting, the major players, and the realm of possibility all change radically as the characters progress through the campaign. ❄️ Icewind Dale is a fantastic setting. I may be biased as I have fond childhood memories of the old R.A. Salvatore books and the Bioware video games, but there is just so much classic Forgotten Realms lore here. You'll parley with vengeful Goliaths, hunt down a serial killer, slay (or be slain by) a particularly unique dragon, unearth a lost city, and battle a literal god. Ø This is a zero to hero adventure. You'll begin as weaklings that a goblin could one-shot, and you'll eventually topple a demigod. βš”οΈ This campaign will be combat heavy. Almost every session will have combat, often two and occasionally even three. 🎲 Rolling dice is fun, right? I try to make sure every skill, no matter how obscure, has a useful application in the game. Want to make use of that flute proficiency? We'll work something out. Want to craft some poisons? Let's design a system. Did you take expertise in Medicine? Yeah, there will be opportunities for medicine checks. The world will be deeply interactive. 🏰 Being a hero in an epic fantasy story should be exciting. Tracking arrows and counting rations is boring. I eschew simulationist mechanics. I can see how some people could be into that, but you won't find it here. πŸ† Skill challenges! I recycled this old 4th edition mechanic to help add excitement and tension to non-combat encounters. It's a great tool for making 'action sequences' that aren't fights come to life and feel high-stakes. 🎭 The tone of the story will be grim and dramatic. Obviously, a good session involves tossing around jokes and everyone cracking up now and then, but the characters and story itself are serious. If you want to make a moonwalking vampire spawn version of Michael Jackson or have a blue halfling themed like a Smurf who throws cupcakes in combat, this is not the campaign for that. πŸ’€ No PvP. Most players don't like that, so if that's what you're looking for, hunt down a specific campaign geared towards that niche. πŸ“– This campaign is ideal for intermediate players. I've run Learn to Play campaigns before, and that can be fun, but this one is aimed at people who understand the basic rules and know their way around a character sheet. On the other hand, if you are a DnD expert who knows exactly what Jeremy Crawford said about the wording of every 4e power in a 2010 Reddit AMA, you may be frustrated that your knowledge exceeds that of the DM. πŸ’• No romance or sex. There's no Sharess's Caress in Bryn Shander ;-) . πŸ“· You'll need to use your webcam in this campaign. I've run many sessions with cams both on and off, and things just flow better and the party gels faster when cameras are on.

About me

Hail and well met! My name is Chris! I've been a lover of fantasy and gaming since I was a kid. I'm currently a high school teacher of English, history, and psychology. I love watching a story come together and watching a party be creative and build synergy and power throughout a narrative. Beyond games and stories, I love travel, music (playing and listening), the outdoors (biking, kayaking, skiing), and reading (history, culture, religion, and philosophy).

Character creation

Creating your character

Once you join the campaign on StartPlaying, I'll send you a link to the DnD Beyond campaign page. Once you join there, you can create a level one character from inside the campaign. That'll give you access to my shared content. You can use any official sources, but NO partnered content unless we talk about it first. Ask me if you aren't sure about a particular source. Stick with the basic, default starting equipment. Let me know if you have any questions about character set up!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need a DnD Beyond account to make your character. It's free, as is the Discord account you'll need for the voice/video chat we'll use during sessions. I'll send you the Discord channel link once you join the game.

What Chris brings to the table

🎨 I use visual backdrops for scene-setting during times when the party isn't on a map, along with thematic background music and sound effects to create ambience. I strongly believe in vivid verbal descriptions, but I ground them with visuals. 🎯 I set up combat to allow for tactical choices and maneuvering. I provide challenging combat and exploration encounters to test the party's creativity and keep things exciting. I set up open-ended social encounters that allow players to bring their characters to life and showcase their personalities. βœ‰οΈ I am available for direct message on Discord to answer questions and field ideas. I try to get back to people within a couple hours. βš™οΈ I am up for devising bespoke mechanics if they make sense for your character and aren't overpowered. I've worked with a player to come up with a poison-crafting mechanic for his Alchemist, and I helped design a 'cleanliness' mechanic for a player who wanted his Tabaxi character's love of cleanliness and aversion to filth to be reflected in gameplay.

Homebrew rules

-I allow a +2 bonus on attack rolls for flanking. -I use 'critical saves.' When you (or an enemy) roll a Nat 1 on a save, it adds an extra damage die and/or extends the time of the effect. When you roll a Nat 20 on a save, you avoid all effects and damage, even if the spell description specifies half-damage or another effect. -If you are downed but healed before death, you take a level of exhaustion. This helps enhance the danger of combat and provides more dynamic incentives. -At levels 4, 8, 12, and 16, you get both an ASI and a Feat, although if that feat adds +1 ASI, we don't also add that. This encourages players to choose feats that provide more flavor and mechanics to their characters beyond simply "big number good."
