About the adventure

The Keep on the Borderlands is one of the most iconic adventures ever written for Dungeons and Dragons, a truly classic adventure penned by the late Gary Gygax himself. This is your chance to venture into the Keep, to explore the Caves of Chaos, face the growing menace lurking in the wilderness and win glory, treasure and honor, or die in the attempt, in an epic saga designed to last for approximately thirteen sessions, taking characters from 1st to 4th Level. Heavily inspired by classic modules and lore from the earliest days of D&D, this campaign will be run with the classic B/X Dungeons and Dragons rules, the iconic 'Red Box', through Discord, using Theatre of the Mind. I’ve lost count of the number of times that I’ve run this adventure, but every time it has been different, and its greatest strength is its flexibility, the manner in which it evolves to fit the group playing through it. In addition to Keep on the Borderlands, I will also be adding the module In Search of the Unknown, another classic that fits in with the Borderlands extremely well, a deep dungeon delve in search of the relics of long-dead heroes, their home now infested by…well, that would be telling. A little about myself; many years ago I was the editor of the OD&DITIES fanzine, part of the pre-history of the OSR, I've been running games for thirty years, usually D&D of one flavour or another (and now I feel old...) and have made my living as a novelist for the last twelve, with a few published RPG credits to my name. I run a newbie-friendly, inclusive table, and my style is heavy on roleplay and storytelling, though with a heady mix of daring-do and combat as well. Expect sessions to last around three hours or so. If you’re interested, please get in touch! See you in the Dungeon!

About me

I’ve been a DM for thirty years; ever since the beginning I’ve always seemed to end up behind the screen, but that’s what I prefer in any case. Many years ago, I was involved in the prehistory of the OSR movement running a fanzine called OD&DITIES, one of the first online zines to cover old-school D&D; for the last twelve years, I’ve made my living as a full-time science-fiction and fantasy author, and part-time community activist. Typically, I usually seem to gravitate towards some sort of D&D, and I’ve played every edition at least once in my day, but I’ve also had a lot of fun with WHRPG, Traveller, Call of Cthulhu, Star Trek Adventures and a host of other games, but my primary game is still Dungeons and Dragons - in any edition! I run a completely inclusive campaign, usually at a ‘PG-rating’ level, and tend far more towards ‘noblebright’ than ‘grimdark’. The whole purpose of the game is for everyone to have a good time, and that’s what I always shoot for. My focus tends to be heaviest towards character and story, and I love seeing how a campaign progresses and evolves over time; for me, that's a big part of the fun!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character Creation will be done together during the first session; far more fun that way! The B/X '81 rules will be used, with a few house rules that will be introduced when play begins.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need to join the campaign Discord server; other than that, nothing else is needed, though if you want to buy the rulebook, the '81 Basic Rulebook is available in PDF or Print format at DMGuild.

What Richard Tongue brings to the table

I've been running games for thirty years, and I've been a full-time author for more than a decade; expect interesting stories with ample twists and turns, as well as fun and entertaining adventures. I always go with the Rule of Cool, it fits the system perfectly.

Safety

How Richard Tongue creates a safe table

Player comfort and safety are an absolute priority; this is supposed to be fun and entertaining, after all! I will speak with each player before play to discuss any potential boundaries or concerns, and do all I can to ensure that they are avoided. No unacceptable behavior will be tolerated. I have a ten-minute break in the middle of the session, and at the end, a short debrief to determine how the campaign will progress.
