About the adventure

YOU are seasoned adventurers. You know a LOT about weapons, magic, and survival. What you DON'T know is how to run a shop, or pay taxes, or catch a very opinionated feline. But you'll have to learn, because that's the job you apparently accepted. In this cozy, low stakes campaign, you'll embark with your party on the adventure of business ownership. Take an empty shop and make it your own, whether that's a tavern, a cafe, or an art supply store. You'll have to meet your neighbors, build relationships with suppliers and customers alike, and yes, make sure you pay your taxes (or hey, maybe you run a campaign to abolish taxes and spread the wealth; I can't stop you). If you like Legends & Lattes, iyashikei anime, and/or Stardew Valley, this is the campaign for you.

About me

I've been GMing and playing ttrpgs at least weekly for the past 7 years. D&D 5th edition is where I spend the bulk of my time, but I've also played in/run other systems such as Shadowdark, Daggerheart, Nimble, Starfinder, etc. I've DM'd multi-year campaigns with a consistent group as well as brief community mini campaigns and one-shots with rotating players. My focus as a DM is on story, but I pride myself on encyclopedic rules knowledge (that I'm nonetheless willing to bend if it maximizes the fun at the table).

Character creation

Creating your character

You should arrive at the first session with a character (mostly) prepared, using the parameters below. In the first session, probably for the first half, we'll talk about characters, their relationship to each other, what your history has been so far, etc., so it's okay if you don't have everything 100% fleshed out right away. 1) Books. Anything from the Player's Handbook (2014 or 2024), Xanathar's, or Tasha's is permitted. Other sources may be allowed, just ask. 2) Races. This is fairly unrestricted. Let me know what you're thinking if it's outside the books above, but pretty much anything published for 5e should work in this campaign. If you have an idea for a character that doesn't exist, let me know and I'll happily homebrew something. 3) Ability Scores. You can roll stats or use the standard array. 4) Level. You can be any level you want, to a maximum of 5. This campaign will support a party that's different levels, so if you're most comfortable playing a level 1 or 2 character, that's great! You'll get to grow as we go. 5) Equipment. You can have any weapons and armor from the PHB that costs less than 200 gp. You can also start with 1 uncommon magic item or 2 common magic items of your choice. (If you don't know what to pick, just let me know and I'll help out). *) Help, I'm New and I Don't Know What Any of This Means! That's wonderful! Welcome to D&D, we're so excited to have you! Shoot me a message and I'll offer more explanation and walk through the steps with you.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should have a Discord account and a setup that provides working video and audio. The DM will provide a Discord server link, which will be used for the video call. If a VTT is used, the DM will provide a link, but also share his screen. Dice are a delight to roll, but if a player does not possess physical dice they are welcome to use digital dice.

What Colten brings to the table

What you can expect: delightful NPCs, comfortable ambience, and a real sense of achievement and community building as your shop comes to life. Yes, I will be providing challenges and hurdles to overcome, but with determination, friendship, and *maybe* a good punch to a bully's teeth, there's nothing you won't be able to do. Players will have a good deal of creative control (build what you want, talk to who interests you), but I will provide the structure of clearly-stated mechanics for improving your shop, developing your relationships with key townspeople, and managing a business.

Safety

How Colten creates a safe table

As part of their prep materials, players will be provided a link to a questionnaire that asks about their expectations, experience, and any lines/veils they may have. We'll also do stars and wishes at the end of sessions, along with general session debriefs. And communication throughout remains of top importance.
