About the adventure

Based on the spectacular Netflix tv series, this mini campaign of about 6 sessions will feature survival-style D&D with sci-fi flair. You will need to reconvene your crew after crash landing, travel across unmapped terrain, and do your best to distinguish threat from treat in an alien wilderness. Expect to see many, many unusual critters; brave a multitude of terrain hazards; and find out what it truly means to be a crew. If you can keep from killing each other, that is. This campaign is open to players of all aptitudes. If you're new to D&D, reach out to the DM ahead of time so he can make sure you're set up for success and ready to roll when the game starts. "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." - Arthur C. Clark. "Spells" in this setting are simply reflavored into technology. All other mechanics remain the same. A druid, then, could be the party's ecologist. A cleric, the medic. And a wizard, the do-it-all technician. In addition, while this is not a setting for fantastical races (elves, gnomes, tieflings, etc.) you're not limited to only doing human builds. If you want to use certain race/species mechanics, just ask! Any other flavor questions or ideas can be directed to the DM.

About me

I've been GMing and playing ttrpgs at least weekly for the past 7 years. D&D 5th edition is where I spend the bulk of my time, but I've also played in/run other systems such as Shadowdark, Daggerheart, Nimble, Starfinder, etc. I've DM'd multi-year campaigns with a consistent group as well as brief community mini campaigns and one-shots with rotating players. My focus as a DM is on story, but I pride myself on encyclopedic rules knowledge (that I'm nonetheless willing to bend if it maximizes the fun at the table).

Character creation

Creating your character

Players should arrive for the first session with one or two character concepts at minimum, and a mostly-complete character sheet at most. The first part of session 1 will be spent finalizing characters, party relationships, and any sci-fi reskinning that's necessary. Stats can be rolled for or use the standard array. If you feel you have any questions about how to make your character, or whether your idea will fit with the setting, reach out to the DM ahead of time. Characters will begin at level 3. All materials from the Player's Handbook (2014 or 2024), Xanathar's, or Tasha's or permitted. If you have any particular requests outside of those, ask the DM.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should have a Discord account and a setup that provides working video and audio. Ahead of the game, the DM will create a group chat on Discord, which will be used for the video call. Dice are a delight to roll, but if a player does not possess physical dice they are welcome to use digital dice.

What Colten brings to the table

This campaign will feature a major Inciting Incident (crashing on a wild planet) and a clear final goal (survive and escape). The space between those two points, however, will be wide open. Players will be able to choose their path, what risks they want to take, and, perhaps, whether they want to escape at all. The planet's wilderness *will* be dangerous, and so the right balance of bravery, caution, study, and chance will be necessary to make it through. Using the 5e rules as a skeleton, I'm open to just about any amount of sci-fi reskinning that players want to do. Likewise, I run my sessions rules-as-written for the most part so that everyone at the table is using the same language and has the same expectations, but I will happily deviate to rule-of-cool for specific, exciting moments. If there's ever something that you want to try, *especially* if it tells a good story, please ask! Combat-wise, there will likely be a balance of theater-of-the-mind and using Owlbear Rodeo as a virtual tabletop.

Safety

How Colten creates a safe table

Before session 1, the DM will send out a lines and veils survey specific to this adventure. If at any point during the session a player has questions or feels uncomfortable, I welcome and encourage them to speak up. If they prefer not to, however, any mid-session concerns can be directly messaged to me.
