About the adventure

A lot of people come to Mutants & Masterminds with a myriad of questions and no lead on finding answers. How do you design a character? What are you, as a player, expected to know? What should you expect in a normal session? Where do you find information about things like powers and advantages? What power level is Superman? We'll start with the basics; what GMs do vs. what players do, how to navigate the rules, how to communicate and negotiate expectations, and how to work with the other players at the table. I'll walk you through coming up with a character idea and building it using the rules of the game, as well as how to read your sheet and pick what actions best suit various situations. And then I'll launch a brief campaign custom designed around the characters this party made so you can put all you learned into practice!

About me

I'm a ministry student, writer, and small-time farmer in rural New England. Author of the paranormal fantasy webserial Tall Tales, and Christian theology blogger posting as The Worst Baptist. My interest in the paranormal, mythology, and religion shows through in a lot of my stories, as I borrow themes and settings from stories people have passed down to help make the game world more relatable. I started playing tabletop games in high school (late 2000) to develop my storytelling skills and view the experience of collective storytelling as the most important aspect of playing or running a campaign. As such, I am focused on giving players a very interactive and complex world, and the freedom to explore and change it. I tend to build fairly open-world settings and encourage players to test what they can and can't do with it. I have never played as a GM in a module I didn't personally design. I enjoy working with players to develop a world and story that we all feel we contributed to! I believe the rules of the system and my role as a GM exist to facilitate a positive experience of the game, and will therefore entertain notions of shifting or turning a blind eye to rules when it serves the greater purpose of the story; a very compelling argument, or just a really cool idea that will improve the experience for everyone, will usually win me over. My view of GMing is fundamentally cooperative. I'm not working to ruin all your plans or kill all your characters, I am working with you to craft a story. A good story needs challenges, and I intend to challenge you, but will always aim to have those challenges improve the experience for everyone. If you walk away from the game feeling like you just helped write a novel that you can take pride in, I feel I've done my job.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be built as part of the process of this campaign. They will be built at Power Level 5, and we will be using Foundry to build them.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Since the game will be hosted on Foundry, all you'll need to access it is a browser on a device larger than a phone (you *can* use a mobile browser set to Desktop mode, but the interface gets difficult to manage if you try; it's best to avoid the frustration if at all possible. And I assure you, it will be frustrating if you try it on mobile). We will be using a web-hosted video call service called vdo.ninja for conversation during game sessions. This does not require anything from you but a browser (mobile browsers are fine) with access to a mic and speaker. Cameras are optional. I will send you a link to the Rabid Haberdashery Discord server on sign up. This is not required, but it will be much easier for you to communicate with one another and with me between sessions there.

What Tim brings to the table

I lean very heavy on improv as a GM. This allows game to run much more smoothly, as I don't have to be constantly finding my place in notes. I encourage creativity from you, as well; my style lets me adjust pretty quickly to the party exploring new approaches. Primarily, what you're getting from me in this campaign is a firm grasp on how to approach and enjoy the game in your own style while operating under the rules as written. The goal is for you to understand Mutants & Masterminds as both a game and a social event, and that means engaging with the rules and with each other! I will be patient and mindful as we walk through this process. I don't want to waste your money by taking more sessions than are needed, nor do I want to rush things and leave you with a half-baked understanding of things I promised to teach you. I have worked with kids and adults (my nine-year-old son is now running a game!), and understand differing needs.

How Tim creates a safe table

In our discussion about communicating and negotiating expectations, we will talk about player safety tools. We will implement at least one survey of sensitive topics (the Consent in Gaming Checklist) to ensure people have exposure to how such tools work and to guide the custom campaign I run for you. This will be done using a fillable pdf.
