About the adventure
The logging community of Bodin's Crossing has never known a master. The Black Teeth are a peaceful wilderness of alpine hills and mountains. No ruler has ever claimed dominion of these quiet lands, nor lifted a finger to aid them. Now King Bauldry sends his tax collectors for the first time, claiming all must do their part to fund his wars, or give up land, property. You have nothing to give? Well, there is always conscription. How will you save your home? 🕯️ Delve into haunted ruins for treasure. 🐂 Track, hunt, or run like hell from mythical beasts. 💬 Communicate with your party! Win with forethought. 🪙 What will your people stomach? Decide your community's future. This beginner-oriented Shadowdark mini campaign is meant to be light on rules, and high on learning. It might just be high on peril, too. Help us make a relaxed table with down-to-earth local characters who just want a bright future for their community. This adventure places the introductory Lost Citadel of the Scarlet Minotaur dungeon in the midst of a local conflict. The game is planned to start May 29!

About me
Nothing makes me happier than providing a fun experience for others, be it through tabletop roleplay, creative writing, gaming, or any other means. Almost as soon as I learned how to play Dungeons & Dragons as a teenager, I decided to become a dungeon master. I suddenly had a whole new way to tell stories, and guide my friends in telling them, too. One of my fondest memories brings me back to the grocery store where I was stocking shelves, and a new friend approached and asked, "So, do you know about all the dragon colors?" Work quickly became far nerdier. I love using tabletop to build a story around the creative ideas of every player, and believe even the newest players can be the greatest. The best way to learn is to play, and I'm always happy to help be the guide while that happens. I am a career journalist who loves weaving in themes from history and literature into my games, and even playing homage to the rich literary history that inspired many of the tropes that survive in gaming today.

Creating your character
Players are asked to make a level 1 Shadowdark character before the game begins on May 29, with help from the referee! We're looking for simple characters who might fit in as community members in a rustic logging community. As such, Bard, Fighter, Priest, Ranger, Thief, and Wizard are probably the most appropriate choices for class! Roll for stats, talent, hit points, and gold. You may also ask the referee for a prepared character! You should decide a few family members, neighbors, or friends for your character. Hopefully they'll just remain as background motivation for your character, but just in case you should have one of them prepared as a backup character. When you join, you'll be sent a collection of reference links to help you "catch the vibe" of The Black Teeth and Bodin's Crossing area!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Players will want to have: Discord, a working clear microphone and speakers, and a Roll20 account. Character sheets on Roll20 will be used. A great, lightweight character creator can be found at https://shadowdarklings.net/create — best to turn off the Scroll 1-4, but keep B&R&K turned on.
What Jer Jones brings to the table
I will bring an enthusiastic, welcoming attitude for anyone looking to jump into Shadowdark, and be especially welcoming and understanding to anyone who is trying to broaden their scope of TTRPG experiences. Play doesn't have to be perfect! Come learn and tell a story! I will provide reference art and maps as needed for the game, a detailed, custom world to explore built around an official introductory adventure, and interesting characters with their own motivations for you to meet. Cat pics!

How Jer Jones creates a safe table
Before the game begins the referee will ask each player about their lines and limits regarding game content, and explain his basic assumptions about what manner of content will be appropriate. During play, players are welcome to express new boundaries, and ask for certain scenes or details to be glossed over more quickly. Players are expected to maintain a relaxed vibe about this sort of thing. We're here to have fun in the weirdness. After sessions, players will be asked to share what components of the game they loved, and what changes they may like. All players should expect this table to be friendly and welcoming to all people. No hate or discrimination from players or referee is welcome. The world of the game won't include hate based on ability, race, gender orientation, or sexual orientation. Such themes are beyond the scope of our story.
