About the adventure

The world drowned a thousand years ago. After the Great Cataclysm shattered civilization, the surviving races rebuilt atop towering islands, mountain ranges, and fractured lands rising above an endless sea. Ancient ruins from the lost Old World still remain scattered across the world — filled with forgotten technology, dormant constructs, hidden dangers, and mysteries no one fully understands. You are newly graduated members of the Diggers Guild, explorers licensed by the Capital Alliance to recover lost technology, investigate ancient ruins, protect settlements, and chart the unknown. Assigned to Guildhall Echo — a newly established guildhall on the edge of the world’s first true frontier — your crew will travel by airship and sea vessel across dangerous skies and isolated islands, taking on guild contracts while uncovering secrets tied to the Cataclysm itself. This campaign blends fantasy and magitech adventure with exploration, mystery, faction conflict, airship travel, naval combat, evolving equipment, and player-driven storytelling. Some sessions may focus on dangerous dungeon expeditions into ancient facilities, while others revolve around faction conflicts, roleplay-heavy investigations, crew interactions, survival, or large-scale world events. I use expanded character options, subclasses, equipment, and custom systems to support the setting, while still keeping the game approachable for both experienced and newer 5e players. Players who enjoy rich worldbuilding, long-term character growth, recurring NPCs, layered mysteries, and meaningful exploration will feel right at home in Tides of Time.

About me

Hello there! I’m Jon, your friendly ADHD goblin. I’ve been DMing for somewhere around 10 or 11 years now. I’ve had interests in D&D for about 18, and a captivation for storytelling and fantasy for as long as I can remember. R Salvatore, Tom Clancy, Weis & Hickman, Robert Jordan, and others guided my childhood and filled me with an imagination that crafts worlds I wish to share with others. I’ve run, played in, and experimented with a variety of TTRPG systems over there years, such as: D&D 5e, Numenara, Legend of the 5 Rings, Shadowrun 5e/6e, Call of Cthulhu, Pathfinder, Starfinder, Warhammer Fantasy, Warhammer 40k, WH40 Dark Heresy, Godbound… I’ve probably missed a few. As a DM I enjoy and encourage creativity, interesting problem-solving, and changing up the stereotypes. I am a pretty player forward DM, but I have no qualms about throwing a challenge at my players or making them think twice about going somewhere they shouldn’t! I am part of TTRPG group called the Game Master's Circle. Come find us at https://discord.gg/BUzzvRcUJF and join our community! We play TTRPGs, we game, and enjoy our community of like minded individuals.

Character creation

Creating your character

Players will sit down with the DM as individuals or as a group on a virtual tabletop (Foundry) and we will create our characters together. All material needed will be provided by the DM. I use all core material, and 3rd party material that I have approved (I unfortunately will not expand beyond that for this campaign). The party will begin at level 1 and will continue until the campaign ends, scaling to their level. I am using 2014 rules, although there are several Quality of Life changes within 2024 that I will allow upon my approval, or my offering.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a Discord account, as well as a Forge account (Where I host my Foundry session). We will use voice chat while we play in our sessions, and this will either be through Discord or Zoom. The place where all relevant information, links, and chatter for the campaign will take place on our groups Discord server. I will provide the link for this once the campaign is joined.

What Overlord Onyx - Jon brings to the table

I will provide all material needed to create interesting character, music to fit the situations the players find themselves in, and years of TTRPG knowledge and storytelling to help craft a story alongside the players that they will never forget. This is also a homebrew world that I have spent almost a decade building, filled with inspiration from a variety of my favorite games, books, and media I grew up with. Some are subtle, and some are a little more on the nose and I hope you notice them and enjoy them too! But really though. I lean a lot more towards Rules as Written, simply because once you have the foundation of the rules down you can begin to creatively work around them. I like to vary up the encounters and try to bring enough combat, roleplay, and exploration to keep all sides engaged in the story. I am also the type of DM that, if you can sell me a reasonable enough story as to WHY you should be able to do the thing, I will likely let you try it. This environment is welcoming to players of all skill levels. It will be a tale of collaborative storytelling that will have impact on the setting as I continue to build it, even as we play and alter things within it.

Homebrew rules

I have a decent list of homebrew rules I offer the players. We will go over them in Session 0, and decide if all of them are what the party wishes to use. But, I will list some of the following that will for sure be in the campaign: Expanded Dragonborn Heritages Expanded Shifter Heritages (Brings back some from the Unearthed Arcana ruleset) Expanded Wareforged Models (Brings back some from removed content as well as some homebrewed ones). Death & Revival - Dyign has consequences that make coming back multiple times more difficult. Leveling Up - Requires a safe place where at least a short rest can occur before leveling up. Potions - Can be used as Bonus Action. Another can be used as an Action, as well as administering to another character. Sharpshooter/Great Weapon Master - Penalty = Prof bonus. Damage = x2 Prof Added The Identify Spell - Only works on Very Rare or lesser Magic items, do not work on Old World Tech or anything the DM deems strange, peculiar, or Old Magic. They may need identified by a professional or through research. Advanced Skills - Arcana, History, Nature, Religion, Animal Handling, Medicine, Slight of Hand, and Survival are Advanced skills. If you do not have proficiency in them, rolls are made a Disadvantage when attempting them. Players can only Help if they also posses the Advanced skill. Warlock Expanded - They are no longer a 1 Trick Pony! All Patron spells are considered Learned once the appropriate level is hit, without using up Spells Known. No longer must you choose between core spells AND Patron spells. Warlocks can also choose a Specialty Cantrip. By default this is Eldritch Blast, but can be any damage dealing cantrip that doesn't deal area of effect damage. Any Invocation that says 'Eldritch Blast' is instead changed to the Specialty Cantrip selected at level 1. Slight alter to Eldritch Spear: When you cast your Specialty Cantrip, its range is doubled; if the range was 5ft or less, it becomes 15ft instead. This does not apply to Green-Flame Blade or Primal Savagery.

Safety

How Overlord Onyx - Jon creates a safe table

Before the campaign begins, we will have a Session 0. During this, we will go over a Social Contract (Sign and date) together to ensure we establish a collective set of rules and expectations as a group. I will individually go over potential Triggers or definitive Red Flags, building a list and anonymously presenting it to the party as material we will not cross the lines of. I will regularly sit down with the party to ensure we are decompressing and providing proper aftercare, especially after intense sessions. I will always have my messanger up and on hand, so that players can message me about anything unexpected that might come up during sessions.
