About the adventure
The rain has not stopped for three days in the Fairelands, and the halls of Blackwood Manor smell faintly of wet roses, old perfume, and something rotting beneath the floorboards. When a prominent aristocrat is murdered during an exclusive masquerade party, Candela Obscura dispatches your circle to investigate quietly before panic spreads through the city. The local authorities believe it to be a tragic killing between jealous lovers. Candela knows better. Witnesses report impossible sounds in the walls, guests claim they saw the victim alive after her death, and every mirror in the manor has been covered in black cloth. This is a roleplay-heavy Candela Obscura one-shot focused on investigation, mystery, atmospheric horror, and character-driven storytelling. Players can expect tense interviews, hidden passageways, occult conspiracies, unraveling secrets, and a slow descent into supernatural terror. Combat may occur, but the focus is on deduction, suspense, and surviving the truth. This game is perfect for players who enjoy: Gothic horror and murder mysteries Supernatural investigations Narrative-first roleplay Emotional and psychological tension Occult fiction inspired by Penny Dreadful, The Haunting of Hill House, Dishonored, and Call of Cthulhu No prior experience with Candela Obscura is required. New players are very welcome, and I’m happy to teach the system as we play.

About me
I have always loved telling stories. It was only natural that at some point in my life I would stumble upon D&D and the world of TTRPGS in general. What I love most about playing these sorts of games is the ability for small communities to tell great tales and connect. That's what I love the most: community and compassion. I am a full-time journalist, a part-time novelist, and someone that loves flowers. The three things I love most in the world are my cats (Moonpie, Cantaloupe, Oscar, Pluto, and Pigeon), my family, and adventure (whether in real life or as part of a made up reality).

Creating your character
Characters will be created before the session using official Candela Obscura rules and pre-approved character concepts. Players are welcome to create their own investigators, or I can provide pregenerated characters for those who want to jump directly into the mystery. We will briefly discuss character connections and Circle dynamics before the game begins so everyone feels naturally tied into the investigation. New players are absolutely welcome, and no prior experience with Candela Obscura is required. The focus of this game is collaborative storytelling, investigation, and immersive roleplay rather than optimization or tactical combat.

What Fern brings to the table
I provide: 🌿 Atmospheric music and ambient sound design 🌿 Custom handouts, clues, and visual aids 🌿 Fully voiced NPCs 🌿 A cinematic, narrative-focused experience 🌿 Mystery and investigation-centered gameplay 🌿 Beginner-friendly guidance for new players 🌿 A collaborative and inclusive table atmosphere My GM style emphasizes immersion, emotional storytelling, suspense, and player agency. I love giving players room to investigate creatively, connect character backstories to the mystery, and solve problems through roleplay and deduction. Candela Obscura works best when players lean into atmosphere, fear, and the unknown, and I aim to create a game that feels tense, haunting, and memorable without becoming adversarial or punishing.
Homebrew rules
This game primarily uses standard Candela Obscura rules with minimal modifications. Any adjustments made during play will prioritize pacing, cinematic storytelling, and collaborative horror over strict mechanical interpretation. Rule of Cool and strong narrative choices are always encouraged.

Safety
How Fern creates a safe table
Player safety and comfort are extremely important at my table. Candela Obscura explores horror, grief, violence, and psychological tension, but I always prioritize creating a respectful and collaborative environment where players feel safe engaging with those themes. Before the game, players will receive a Lines & Veils document and we will discuss boundaries, expectations, and tone together. Even in a one-shot, I like to treat the opening discussion as a mini Session 0 so everyone feels comfortable before play begins. During the game, players may use X, N, & O Cards digitally through Discord chat or private message at any time, no questions asked. I also maintain an Open Door policy, meaning anyone may step away, take a break, or leave the session if needed. I check in regularly during intense scenes and aim for atmospheric horror rather than graphic shock value. The goal is collaborative suspense and emotional storytelling, not discomfort. At the end of the session, we’ll take time for debriefing and aftercare to help everyone decompress, discuss favorite moments, and separate from the heavier themes of the story before leaving the table. My goal is always to create tables that are welcoming, inclusive, beginner-friendly, and respectful to everyone involved.
