About the adventure

It is the 29th year of the Dragon Age. The continent of Thedas is in a time of relative peace. Ferelden, the youngest of Thedas' great kingdoms, is coming into its power. Decades of foreign occupation ended less than a generation ago with a hard-won rebellion, and the Fereldan people are all the more proud for it. Though often considered an unrefined backwater by its more established neighbors, the nation has nonetheless enjoyed prosperity under King Cailan and Queen Anora. The capital city of Denerim boasts profitable ports of trade on the coast of the Amaranthine Ocean. Villages and farms across the Bannorn, protected by their Banns and Arls, produce bounties that feed the people. The Chantry tends to her devoted faithful while the mages of the Circle Tower study their arcane arts under the stern eye of the Templar Order. But of course, Ferelden is still a dangerous place. Bandits, apostate mages, wicked cults, and obscene beasts remain a threat to common people. Facing these dangers, when soldiers are not enough, is the work of mercenaries and adventurers. These people come in all sorts: humble commoners, aspiring knights, circle mages, errant nobility, and more. They come from Ferelden or from lands as far as Tevinter, Rivain, or the Anderfels. Even some Dalish elves and dwarves of Orzammar find fortune doing this perilous work. Whatever their origins, these exceptional people have the talents and skills necessary to overcome challenges others can't. Some might even have the potential to become heroes. Heroes of Ferelden is a Dragon Age campaign about a group of just such people as they go from humble adventurers to true heroes of legend. The entire campaign runs from level 1 to 20 over the course of 21 modules that span two in-game years, and can be divided into three distinct arcs. The first arc, from level 1 to 7, tells the story of the party's rise to prominence, drawing heavily from materials published for the Dragon Age RPG. This arc also functions as a self-contained story, so tables that prefer a shorter campaign can finish here and still have a complete, satisfying ending. Tables that want the full experience can continue into the second arc. This arc, from level 8 to level 11, sees the party in the service of a powerful Fereldan noble and acts as a prelude to the third arc. The final arc, levels 12 to 20, is a retelling of the plot of Dragon Age: Origins featuring many of the same characters and events, sometimes reimagined to better suit a tabletop game while remaining faithful to the original. Fans of the video game can expect a fresh experience in a familiar story, and newcomers to the franchise can explore the rich, dark fantasy world of Thedas. There are many stories to tell in Ferelden, some new and some well known. How will your character tell theirs?

About me

I'm Yirco! I've been playing TTRPGs for years and have GM'd for most of that time. I started with 5e but quickly wanted to branch out to other games. Most of my GMing experience has been with Cyberpunk Red, Vampire: The Masquerade, Dragon Age, and Delta Green. In that time I've found my specialty in delivering impactful narratives over the course of a campaign and building living, meaningful worlds for my players to tell their stories in. Most of my experience has been with friends over long distances using online tools, so I'm very familiar with running a game over the internet.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will create our characters as described in the core rulebook using the "buying abilities" option on page 12 and the "buying background benefits" option on page 13. This will be done as a group during a free session 0, or in a call with me if joining the game in progress. All origins from the core book are acceptable, however the game works best if at least one PC is a local to Ferelden. The Dalish Mage background from the Faces of Thedas book is also acceptable.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need a Discord account so I can send you a link to the server. You'll also need an account with the Forge, which is the Foundry VTT hosting service we use, and I'll send you a link to that. If you are new to the setting you may also want to familiarize yourself with the lore. I'm happy to teach basic lore to newcomers and explain things as we go, but I simply can't cover everything you might possibly want to know. Knowing the lore ahead of time will help you get the most out of the game. Just be careful about spoilers for the portions of the campaign which follow the video game's plot, or at least avoid meta gaming.

What Yirco brings to the table

I'll bring a Discord server with several useful channels and a voice channel to play in, as well as access to a Foundry VTT server that will host the game space and your character sheets. When running the game I'll provide a rich narrative that reacts to your choices, filled with living characters to interact with. I use music, voices, character acting, and vivid storytelling to set the tone during my games. I'll also work closely with you to make your character's story as compelling as it can be. Combat will be frequent, tactical, and meaningful.

Homebrew rules

I'm replacing the "Heraldry" focus with a new focus called "Political Lore," broadening it's use and allowing it to interact with the "Lore" talent. At later levels, PCs and some NPCs will be able to modify their Dragon Die results slightly in order to perform stunts more often, making combat more dynamic and intentional. High-level enemies will have DnD style multi-attacks and/or legendary actions to improve game balance in later levels.

Safety

How Yirco creates a safe table

Dragon Age falls into a category of dark fantasy that often includes elements which some people might find uncomfortable. Most notably, the world of Thedas suffers from social injustices that are reminiscent of real-world issues by design. Prejudice towards certain minority groups in Thedas (such as elves and mages) mirrors bigotry and systemic abuse that affects minority groups in reality. Additionally, themes of political corruption, classism, nationalism, violence, torture, and religious zealotry are prevalent throughout the campaign. Gore, sexual assault, and graphic body horror pertaining to pregnancy are also present, but these are much easier to change or omit if the table desires. Please keep all of these things in mind when joining this game. I will have every player fill out the Monte Cook Consent Checklist and compile everyone's responses into one sheet that will serve as the master list of lines and veils for the campaign. Anything marked red on the sheet will be a line and will not be included. Anything marked yellow can still be included, but will be handled sensitively. I encourage all players to express if a scene is making them uncomfortable during play and I will be happy to skip the content or put it behind a veil. There will also always be time at the end of a session for you to discuss the game with me, and you can message me any time if you have issues with the content.
