About the adventure

Beginners welcome! Rules will be taught! Fiasco is a game about characters with high ambitions and low impulse control. They will inevitably get into trouble, and most of them will come to a bad end. This is in the tradition of Coen brothers movies (Fargo, Raising Arizona, Burn After Reading, etc) in which we all can laugh at the characters accidentally causing their own dooms. In this scenario, you will be playing medieval fantasy adventurers, but not particularly experienced ones. There is magic in the world, but you don't have access to very much of it. (Imagine if you were a D&D adventurer, but probably 4th level or lower.) Nearly all of the world will be created by the players during the setup portion of the game. My guidance will be about keeping the pace quick and light, and offering suggestions if anyone gets stuck for ideas.

About me

I learned to play my first TTRPG (Basic D&D) at age 9, almost fifty years ago. Within three years of that, I started GMing, beginning with D&D, Gamma World, and Traveller. Since that time, I have played scores of different TTRPG systems, (and starting around age 19, several LARP systems as well), and I haven't paused for more than a couple of months since then. Currently, I run a monthly D&D 5e (2014) campaign and a weekly Masks: New Generation PbtA campaign for my offline friends. But I have even more stories I want to share with the world at large!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation is part of the game itself. Fiasco takes place in four phases: Setup, Act One, Act Two, and the Aftermath. Character creation occurs during the Setup phase.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You should have a Discord account and sign into my server for the game. You should have the ability to read a PDF file that I will have available for your download in the Discord. You may wish to have your own dice (about 6d6 of two contrasting colors), but this is not necessary.

What David: The Bearded One brings to the table

I will provide the Fiasco playset (as a PDF download), and I will help all of the players understand the rules and the flow of play. I will also play NPCs if that is needed. I will help everyone keep track of where the game's dice are at any time if there is any confusion. I do slightly alter the Aftermath phase of the game to make that phase go more smoothly and quickly.

Homebrew rules

Each character will have their own Needs; this helps to speed up and simplify the Setup phase. I have found that the Aftermath phase can get a little slow compared to the rest of the game, so I alter that phase for speed of play.

Safety

How David: The Bearded One creates a safe table

We will collectively compile a Lines & Veils document before the beginning of the Setup phase. The table has an open door policy if any lines are crossed, though hopefully this will be a last resort.
