About the adventure

Kids on Bikes is an easy to learn narrative TTRPG about young people trying to solve a possibly supernatural mystery in their home town. Knocking on Doors is an adventure suitable for players new to Kids on Bikes, but probably not for first time role-players. It is election season in your town, and some of the candidates are willing to go much further than is probably ethical to win their public offices. To the grown ups around you, it is just another indication that politics are getting dirtier and more crass, but you and your friends come to suspect that something really out of this world may be going on! Rules will be taught, but players should know the basics of narrative role playing already. This is also an adventure than may get into darker themes than is common for Kids on Bikes games. Please read the content warnings if you are unsure if this adventure is for you. Session one will also include compiling a list of Lines and Veils specific to the players.

About me

I learned to play my first TTRPG (Basic D&D) at age 9, almost fifty years ago. Within three years of that, I started GMing, beginning with D&D, Gamma World, and Traveller. Since that time, I have played scores of different TTRPG systems, (and starting around age 19, several LARP systems as well), and I haven't paused for more than a couple of months since then. Currently, I run a monthly D&D 5e (2014) campaign and a weekly Masks: New Generation PbtA campaign for my offline friends. But I have even more stories I want to share with the world at large!

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation (as well as the town generation) occurs during the first session of the game. All player characters should be teenagers between 15 and 18 years old (still high school age).

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should have Discord accounts, as the game play will occur entirely through Discord. It may be beneficial - but not required - to have a blank character sheet or at least paper in order to record your character's attributes as you generate them.

What David: The Bearded One brings to the table

I will teach the rules of Kids on Bikes to those players who do not know them well, and I will help to establish the town and NPCs around your characters. I will also host the Discord where the game is run, and provide the dice rolling app. I will also help to describe what horrors befall your party when the rolls don't go your way.

Homebrew rules

The "Powered Character" is a powerful ally to your player characters, but to help make the game more horrific and tense, that NPC will be primarily under the control of the Game Master, and the PCs will be able to influence what they may do primarily through in-character interactions rather than by directly controlling their actions.

Safety

How David: The Bearded One creates a safe table

Prior to character and town creation in session one, we will generate a Lines & Veils document to help establish what known triggers will be avoided. This campaign will also use Stars & Wishes in order to more precisely tailor the events of the story to the enjoyment of the players. And there is always an open door policy so that all of the players can take care of their own needs in case the game play becomes problematic for them. X, N, and O cards will be available, but take the form of Red, Yellow, and Green squares on the Discord for ease of use.
