About the adventure

Join us here to apply for the larger (Paid) campaign "Mirondar". A world where magic is common, but so is danger. 50 years ago, the city of Mirondar was humanity's last hope for freedom against the forces of darkness. Now, a new set of heroes are needed. Will you answer the call? Love D&D? Come play with us. New to RPGs? Come play with us! Just want to hang out? Come don't-play with us! Everyone is welcome, just one rule: Don't be a Jerk. This is a hangout and recruitment session. One-shots are common, but a 'game' is not guaranteed. This OPEN HOUSE is intended as a way for new players to learn how to play, and to introduce prospective players into the larger campaign world of MIRONDAR. The Color Animal Inn is a meeting place for adventurers - somewhere to gather between expeditions for food and drink, talk and laughter, and to make new friends. Join us every night, as we get together looking for something exciting to do! Will we delve into a deep, dark, disused and disgusting dungeon? Or roam the thick forests chasing down game in a hunt for exotic trophies? Perhaps we simply sit and share tales of our past exploits, or our dreams for the future. The adventure depends on who is here at the time, and what Y'all feel like doing!

Character creation

Creating your character

For new players, pre-generated characters are available, or the session can include character creation. Details depend on the game being played at the time. All characters are restricted to content from the 2024 Players' Handbook. Your character will be created at Level 1, using the Roll20 character creator. The creator will provide many, but not all options. For options that are unavailable (behind paywall), just choose the default and we can make changes later. ***Be Careful To Only Use The 2024 Options!*** All characters can, and very much should, choose: 1 Primary Melee Weapon 1 Primary Ranged Weapon 1 Set of Armor (50gp value or less) 1 Shield (if desired) These items are 'heritage' items, special to your character perhaps, with which your character begins their adventure. The character creator will give you the option to choose additional gear automatically, or you can take the cash value. Characters will have the option to obtain basic adventuring gear as needed. House Rules cover some of this so don't spend too much time on it. ***Please use the in-session character creator!*** If your character exists in another form, use this to re-build them as closely as possible.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a (free) Roll20 Account. You will need a (free) Discord Account. You will need a headset. A microphone is extremely helpful but not strictly required. You will need to hear us; we won't necessarily need to hear you. This is an introductory session; you will learn everything else as we go.

What Barth brings to the table

I am a very long-term player and game master, with decades of experience in various systems. In this session, I will take the role of Barth Ender, proprietor of *The Color Animal Inn," where new adventurers can join us in an ongoing adventure spanning decades of real-life sessions! "It's an open house for new players... if they're learning dnd, I teach. Once they know enough, we play. If they enjoy, they join the larger campaign or come back for more next week."

Homebrew rules

1) The GM's ruling stands. In cases where the GM is wrong, this will be discussed outside of the game session, the GM will admit it, and the 'proper' rule will apply in the future. 2) Player agency is vital to a good game. As such, the GM protects this whenever possible. I will avoid using mind-control on your characters except in certain circumstances. 3) PvP activity must be consentual by both parties. For example, if Player 1 attacks Player 2, P2 can choose the outcome either directly (by saying yes or no, or suggesting an alternative outcome) or by dieroll. Regardless, in any PvP situation all parties agree to DM arbitration. 4) A turn is one MOVE and one ACTION, plus possible BONUS actions or REACTIONS. The GM can call for additional dierolls or other turn-related activity at any time; these *may* not count against a player's normal turn economy. 5) A standard healing potion heals 2d4+2hp when used as a BONUS action, or 10hp when used as a normal ACTION. 6) When an outcome is uncertain, or can be left for fate to decide, the GM may ask for a 1d100 LUCK ROLL. The higher the number, the more likely the outcome will benefit the players. 7) Characters in the OPEN HOUSE games will begin and remain at level 1. Milestone leveling is used in the CAMPAIGN. 8) The GM has a bunch of other house rules he can't think of right now, and has the right to implement them whenever he wants. He knows not to be a jerk about it, tho!
