About the adventure

"One hundred and fifty years after the Battle of Yavin, peace reigns throughout the Galaxy! The scars of the old wars have faded, and whole generations have their entire lives in a gentle era of peace. But the new Jedi Order finds itself lost. Once proud knights of the Force, they find themselves suddenly adrift in a world that little needs them. The High Council puts out a call to the brave and the bold of the Galaxy. They seek adventurers and philosophers, warriors and intellectuals; those who know of the Force and long to understand its mysteries. This crew will answer their call to seek out the ancient mysteries of the Force on long forgotten worlds...." Inspired by the old Expanded Universe of books and video games and utilizing the Force and Destiny Core Rulebook, "Star Wars: A Light in the Black" is a galaxy spanning, darkly operatic adventure for Star Wars fans new and old. All are welcome, whether you’re a tabletop newcomer or well-seasoned veteran, as we set out on a new adventure in a familiar world.

About me

Hi! I'm John, and I've been playing Tabletop RPGs for a decade now, and GMing regularly more than seven years. I've both run and played a number of systems, from crunchy dungeon crawlers like OSE and PF1e to more freeform narrative games like Genesys and Masks. In that time, I've told short stories and long stories through tabletop, tight narratives and open sandboxes, and I've discovered my love and passion lies in sweeping narratives, complex characters, and deep, fully realized worlds that everyone at the table can buy into.

Character creation

Creating your character

We'll do Character creation in a group setting during a free session zero, and then we'll flesh them out individually before our first paid session. Players are encouraged to consider what kind of character they want to play beforehand, and to have a couple of concepts ready to flesh out. All character concepts are welcome, but everyone should have a reason to want to explore the mysteries of the Force. Since this is a light side game, characters should try and reflect that. We'll use standard rules for character creation from the the Force and Destiny Core Rulebook, but as long as a character has a reason to join the adventure, all sourcebooks are available. The Oggdude Character Generator is a great tool, and its use is highly encouraged. Characters can be built in it and then exported to the Foundry VTT very easily.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Before we can begin, players will need to create free accounts on Discord and forge-vtt.com to be able to join the server and make use of the virtual tabletop. A short player's handbook covering the game scenario, as well as rules and expectations, will also be available to get some ideas going before the free session zero where we will make our characters.

What John brings to the table

I'll provide a tightly crafted narrative with a large cast of memorable characters, believable motivations, and lots of hooks to help players engage with a reactive world where their choices really matter. To make that easier, as a compulsive writer for my games I like to maintain full quest logs, character profiles, and session summaries to make it as easy as possible for players to track the story and the world as we go. I run a cinematic, theatre-of-the-mind style table, enhanced with character voices and an atmospheric visual backdrop within the VTT to encourage a unique medieval aesthetic. I like to be adaptable in exploring the Rule of Cool to find the approach that works best for our table as we play.

Homebrew rules

We'll begin our game running play Rules as Written, but the Complete Species Guide v6 will be made available for character creation.

Safety

How John creates a safe table

Player comfort is the most important thing for me as a GM, so I'll make a "Lines and Veils" document available before we start, which we'll go over during the free session zero. We'll also cover content expectations at that time to make sure everyone is on the same page about what we'll experience in game. Our front line safety tool will be the X card, which I've incorporated into the VTT, and it can be digitally or verbally signaled at any time. I like to maintain a low pressure atmosphere, and if a player doesn't feel comfortable raising an issue openly at the table they can contact me privately in DMs at any time and we'll talk it out and find a solution.
