Hombrew Setting W/ 5e Overhaul: Iron-Klad [LGBTQ+] [Low Magic]

Your adventuring party is one too small. Klad Raddick was last known to be in Ivory's Child. Don't let what took them take you.

About the adventure

The campaign starts in Ivory's Child, a city north of The Ivory Coast. There you'll have to use wits and caution to uncover the beginnings of a conspiracy that threaten you and who knows how much of Drevar itself, all while looking for your lost party member Klad Raddick. This campaign will feature mystery, political intrigue, and deadly combat all using a custom 5e overhaul I made to fix some power scaling issues and inherent balance problems. This 5e overhaul is based on 2014 rules, and draws some inspiration from Pathfinder 2e, while not being near as complicated. Drevar is packed with different monsters, factions, environments, and mysteries that you will have to navigate to uncover threats to your party and the world at large. Those who seek to operate in silence will not take kindly to your meddling - and you will have to prepared to face those with a no witness policy. In Drevar, if something wants you dead, they will not stop until you are, or until you kill them first. You will often be carrying highly sensitive information that endangers you simply by knowing it. You may not even understand its implications until you've realized you're already in the deep end. Be daring, be cautious, and be lucky. You'll need to be.

About me

Yo! My name's Charlie. I'm a 26-year-old butch who's in love with story-telling and game design. Naturally, this leads me to create custom systems for use to effectively the tell the type of story I want. I make overhauls to fill in the gaps of existing systems, and pull from a myriad of other TTRPG games to hash together rules that enhance gameplay, rather than get in the way of it. If you like homebrew or aren't satisfied with the way current D&D 5e (or other systems!) are played, I'm the DM for you. I like to dabble in a myriad of different themes for my games. Prior to starting on this platform, I've ran a superhero campaign using Cypher, a mystery campaign using Pokemon Tabletop United, and a more standard adventure fantasy using Pathfinder 2e. I'm also currently DMing a cosmic mystery campaign using D&D 5e, although I've modified the rules quite a bit to better fit the campaign's vision. I'd like to eventually try my hand at Shadowdark, Shadowrun, Thirsty Sword Lesbians, Draw Steel, and some niche indie TTRPGs that some folks have made that I wish got more exposure! I think my favourite systems I've played are Cypher and Pathfinder 1e. One provides satisfying crunch and powergaming, the other provides clean narrative flow without getting bogged down in rules. Both are good for different types of campaigns. Generally I want to my make my campaigns more conducive to the TTRPG system I'm playing with. Different systems allow for different elements of RP to shine, and different styles of campaigns benefit from these. I've also played in many different systems including Pathfinder 1e, Starfinder 1e, Advanced D&D, D&D 4e, and Old School Essentials. I'm down to run any system, and I currently have a custom one that uses many elements from the Cypher system that I'm working on for use in a gothic horror campaign much like the Castlevania series, so stay tuned if that peaks your interest! You can reach out to me on here for any questions or even just want to talk game design with me, or you can email me at rattmuck@gmail.com. I'm more likely to check my email since I have to be at my computer to check startplaying.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation in concept is not that much different than base 5e. You will get more options than your average DM may give you to start out with. Weapon choice matters a lot, and you can choose between these species that are present in Drevar, the setting that I've created and am using for this campaign's story: - Changelings - Halflings - Humans - Orcs - Half-orcs - Hobgoblins - Half-Hobgoblins - Yuan-Ti - Gnomes - Goliaths - Dwarves - Elves - Half-elves I've overhauled the features of these species to make them more consistent and fit the vision of how they function in Drevar. Each species has a different relationship to Drevar. Be warned! There is racial discrimination in this setting between species. If you don't want to deal with that, I suggest not joining this campaign. The inclusion of this is meant to provide political tensions in Drevar and to de-construct systemic issues we face in real life. This is intended to present politically, and will show up less so in your average interaction with NPCs. Please note that these Changelings are in fact based off of the Forgotten Realms version, NOT Golarian (Pathfinder) setting. This simply means that they shapeshift and are not the off-spring of hags. Other species show up pretty much how you'd normally envision them, with some altered aspects of their physiology and how that presents mechanically. Weapons have been overhauled as previously mentioned. Which weapon you pick at character creation will matter! All weapons are based off of real-life weaponry, with a couple creative liberties taken for fun. - Ranged weapons are deadly, but are most strict on reloading rules. You can get features to help mitigate reloading, but you cannot ignore reloading entirely. - Renaissance firearms can't be reacted against with magic or abilities. They are deadly, but not always practical and are more expensive. Modern firearms are not present in Drevar. - Big maces and hammers are harder to wield, but hit harder. - Bladed weaponry is more consistent. - Knives & daggers can dish out extra damage when you're flanking. Everyone gains 1 extra feat at character creation. ASIs give +3 points to ability scores instead of 2. Character backstory has an individual portion, and then an adventuring party portion. All characters already know each other, so sorting out what happened during your adventuring party days up to this point will be important. So too will sorting out what everyone's relationship to Klad Raddick was.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

All you need is discord or signal. Discord is preferable as of current because of its convenience, but there's a possibility of needing to move chat clients if discord becomes too intrusive with ads, or doubles down on privacy intrusion. I use FoundryVTT to run my games. I don't use Forge, which means if you want to make edits to your character you'll have to let me know so I can open the server for you. I have no issues doing this at any time, provided it's during waking hours. Responses may also be late if I'm running a session when you ask me. Please have at least an ok mic with not a lot of disruptive background noise. The occasional sound is ok, but if we're hearing constant voices/and or hums from the background that can't be fixed, you unfortunately can't play at my table. Sorry!

What Charlie Tuesday brings to the table

I use soundscapes and music, sometimes custom-made, to immerse players into the story. I take pride in my audio choices during as a DM. Other than that though, I want to tie characters into the world they're in, set seeds for mystery and plot, and set up big character moments that you'll hopefully never forget! I also love hearing characters role play and am happy to listen while I plan for the near future. My combats are usually pretty tough, but not unfairly so. While this campaign will have tough combats, though, it is distinct from a meat-grinder. This isn't tomb of annihilation. I'll use NPCs/organizations/any plot devices you give me from your backstory. I want to include them so you can interact with them. Such is the point of D&D!

Homebrew rules

Here some (but definitely not all) of the homebrew changes for this overhaul: - You can drink potions as an action or bonus action. Drinking them as an action gives you the max healing you can get from the potion. - HP scales MUCH slower after level 5. You can still be tanky, but the discrepancy between higher levels for HP will be decreased dramatically. - Higher level magic is reduced. You'll need magic items, scrolls, or artifacts to cast spells higher than 4th level. However, you can make a homebrew cantrip/spell with me that is unique to your character and always prepared! I love doing this.

Safety

How Charlie Tuesday creates a safe table

I have players fill out the Monte Cook RPG checklist, so I have a reference of content to avoid always available. I have a very low tolerance for anyone getting misgendered in my games. This also extends to myself. If you are not familiar with playing D&D with trans people, I recommend you do not join my game. Obviously, any sort of hate speech at all will result in immediate removal from the campaign. If any players are ever uncomfortable with another player at the table, I encourage you to let me know so we can solve that as soon as possible. D&D should be fun, and I have no place for creeps or bigots at my table. We'll take take breaks about half-way through each session. These will be 10 - 15 minutes so you can go make tea or use the washroom, or just chat. I'll probably be at my computer doing some small prep while the break happens, so you're welcome to chat with me during the break. If anyone needs to the leave the session for a break or any reason, they are welcome to do so. Nobody will judge you for doing it, and I'm very flexible. I will always let players know if a session is cancelled at least 24 hours in advance if possible. Players are not bound by the same policy, but just try to let me/us know as soon as you are able if you cannot make it to a session. I will always run a session if there are at least 3 players present.
