About the adventure
“We’re too late,” you mutter. It was a peaceful village. Now the water wheel you and your parents visited to grind your grain into flour lays shattered in the river. The once boisterous inn is nothing more than a pile of stones and broken beams. All around are signs of destruction. Some villagers weep over the fallen, others sit in shock, with their heads in their hands. “Who did this?” you ask a man clearing bricks off the road. “A dragon rider. They landed over there,” he points to what was once a temple. “They killed everyone inside, destroyed those buildings, grabbed some people, and flew away.” Before you can respond a cry splits the air. “Dragon!” Whipping your eyes to the sky, you see it. Sunlight gleaming on its scales. Wings tucked in. Diving towards you. “Take cover!” you shout. Your companions spread out and draw weapons. At the last second the dragon unfurls its wings, arresting its descent. It lands with a thud less than fifteen feet away from you. “We need to talk,” the silver scaled creature says directly to you. “We need to help each other against this enemy.” — In VENGEANCE OF THE DRAGON RIDER you play an adventurer tasked with stopping an unstoppable foe: The Lady of Terror. Hello! My name is Vahid. As well as being a Dungeon Master for 40+ years, I am the producer and DM of the streaming show Dice Legenz (links below to check out our show). Over the 40+ years of being in the D&D scene I have spent thousands of hours playing HEAPS of different TTRPG systems, but I especially love D&D 5th edition. Role-playing games are an amazing way to connect with friends, make new friends, create new and exciting worlds, and just have a wonderful creative time. While running pre-made modules is fun, the real excitement for me is creating new worlds, new characters, new adventures. Therefore, the games that I run are in unique world settings. Together, we will encounter monsters you have never seen before in places no one has ever visited before. And at the heart of all of the adventure are the characters that YOU make - the heroes, or perhaps antiheroes, of our adventure. Creating your character
Characters will start at level 9. We will discuss character creation in our free Session Zero. Feel free to bring character ideas to the session but the characters will be locked in during the Session Zero. During that session we will talk about character backstories, connections, and the setting. Players will then make/finlise their level 9 characters. You are welcome to use 2024 or 2014 traits. Official D&D book sources only. Standard array or point buy stats. Averaged hit points. Whatever mundane equipment you want. We will discuss magic items. You can use the character creator tools within the Roll20 game if you want. I have access to the full 2024 and 2014 Players Handbook options.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You will need a working microphone, internet connection, account on Roll20 (it is free), and to join my Discord server (also free). Cameras are optional. I use a camera. You can choose.
What Vahid Qualls brings to the table
VTT, professional maps, immersive music, professional voicing. We use the Rules as Written most of the time, but aren't afraid to bend them to make room for the Rule of Cool.
Homebrew rules
Initiative scores instead of rolling initiative. This gets us into combat faster. See pg. 42 of the Dungeon Masters Guide for details. Critical Saving Throws. A nat 20 on a saving throw roll means no effect, even if a save would normally mean 1/2 damage. A nat 1 on a saving throw means double damage. If a character with the Evasion trait (e.g. rogues and rangers) rolls a nat 1 they take full damage instead of half damage.
