About the adventure

The Underdark is a subterranean wonderland, a vast and twisted labyrinth where fear reigns. It is the home of horrific monsters that have never seen the light of day. It is here that the dark elf Gromph Baenre, Archmage of Menzoberranzan, casts a foul spell meant to ignite a magical energy that suffuses the Underdark and tears open portals to the demonic Abyss. What steps through surprises even him, and from that moment on, the insanity that pervades the Underdark escalates and threatens to shake the Forgotten Realms to its foundations. Stop the madness before it consumes you! I'm looking to run this campaign for a group of 4-6 players every other week. $20 each players for 3 hours per session. I have alternating Thursdays available. Please let me know what works best for your group! I'll be hosting audio and visual on my Discord server and using Roll20 for character sheets, rolling, and tactical movement. Other features: *LGBTQ+ and beginning players welcome! I have one rule: respect each other. If you make a mistake, we'll talk about it. If you disrespect other players on purpose, we'll talk about whether this is the game for you. Come to have fun together and experience a good story, and we're good. *I encourage players to role-playing as much as they wish. If you're more reserved, I can ham things up for both of us. Just be aware, that if you're not talking, I will be :). * I will summarize the events of each session, so that players can keep up with the action.

About me

I want to run your dream game. I've been running games for four decades now, and I still absolutely love doing it. I'm a retired college professor with a PhD in English Literature, and I'm currently working as a corporate trainer, but this seems like a fun thing to do on the side for some extra spending money. I'm also a published author. I wrote a handful of adventure modules and contributed to a few sourcebooks for different games including D&D and 7th Sea, and I've written scholarly works on depictions of the Catholic Inquisition in Gothic Literature and the coming-of-age story in English-speaking countries around the world. What I like most about meeting a new group is finding out what kind of stories they want to tell and helping them tell those tales.

Character creation

Creating your character

1st level. Standard Array for abilities. Please let me know if you'd like to use homebrew or 3rd party publisher materials, so I can take a look at it first.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

If you'd like to make a character prior to the first session, please let me know what class, species, and background you're interested in playing and post in the Discord, so the other players can plan accordingly. Alternately, you can wait until session one to create your character, with the realization that we will have to delay your entrance into the game until you have the minimum viable character (i.e. name, short description, class, species, background).

Safety

How Jarad creates a safe table

Please create or import your characters to Roll20, so that we can utilize its resources. I am open to using either 2014, 2024, or both rules for player characters, and you should have access to my rules through Roll20. I will post session summaries in the Roll20 forum for the campaign. Everything else will be run through Discord, including roll call between games. If you do not think you'll be able to make it, please let me know at least 3 hours prior to the start of the game. If we have less than 3 players in a session, I can cancel that session.
