About the adventure

The multiverse lies before you, teeming with danger and requiring brave heroes like the graduates of Vanguard University. As a prospective student on an exciting weekend mission, it is your chance to prove yourself worthy! Your esteemed professor, Edena Lancor, will chaperone this adventure to ensure your safety. At least that is what you hope for. Together with a small group of other prospective students you will explore the infamous Hallowhall Manor, renowned as the most haunted and cursed house in all the multiverse! Your objefctive: recover a personal artifact from the last spiritualist who owned the manor. She was a man genius exorcist who painted dangerous enemies and ghosts into her portraits. What could possibly go wrong? Enter the eerie Hallowhall Manor and prove yourself ready to become a premier adventurer or join the ranks of the spirits haunting its corridors. Touchpoints include: Penny Dreadful, Haunting of Hill House, The Others, Legacies. This is a standalone one-shot but it is designed as a prequel to the Vanguard University campaign I run as a way to check out the world and to learn the game. Because this is a one-shot there will not be significant roleplay or character development that you would get in the campaign, but it is a fun way to learn the system and check out my style. Adventurers who play in this game may start with a bonus of some sort if they join the campaign later.

Character creation

Creating your character

When you join the game you will receive a link to the discord server where the voice chat and game preperation occur. Character creation will occur before sesssion. If you need access to game materials I can share them through Demiplane. All officially published material and all "the Void" material is accepted. No other homebrew content will be considered at this time. Characters will be level 1 throughout this adventure. I am available to help you make a character. This is a multiverse campaign so whatever you come up with is easily explained; however it is best if your characters fit in an Urban Fantasy or high fantasy setting for this adventure.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should have a Discord account, access to a quality headset to participate in voice chat and have a modern Webbrowser on a PC or tablet to connect to my Foundry VTT site. You will need to join my discord server (link is in the campaign details in StartPlaying.Games.

What Daniel | PapaRatzy brings to the table

I provide a Foundry VTT Server login, custom maps, a Discord Server and music. Demiplane content sharing is available. Assistance in learning the game or making a character is available. I embrace the rule of cool. I believe story is more important than rules as long as it doesn't ruin anyone else's fun. I think character growth is as important as plot development. Flawed characters who make terrible decisions make the best stories! A custom written homebrew Campaign Frame for Vanguard University is available upon request (in draft format). I prefer to make my fights dynamic and have more going on.

Homebrew rules

I prefer to follow the rule of cool whenever possible. If a question of rules arises, the first question I ask myself is: what is best for the story? The game will be run in Foundry VTT, and I provide a playlist of free-use music from Pixabay to help set the mood and theme. I do my best with voices but generally avoid accents, as I am aware of my limitations in that area. I will be using Dungeon Alchemist to construct battlemaps. I also try to find thematically appropriate art for adversaries and NPCs. You will receive a Google form (not optional) to identify your lines and veils. This will be published anonymously and visually so that all players can see the combined lines and veils clearly. This game will include some combat, but also group encounters designed more like environmental challenges. Whenever possible, I encourage players to describe their actions cinematically. For example, instead of saying, "I shoot the goblin with my bow," you might say, "I draw an arrow in my bow and whisper a silent prayer that it finds its mark among the adversaries. A beat passes, then I let loose."

Safety

How Daniel | PapaRatzy creates a safe table

All players will complete a Lines and Veils google form. This form will be anonymous and I will share a summary that will make it clear what content needs to be avoided to make the table safe. In addition, players are encouraged to interrupt game either by shooting me a private message or by speaking up if they are uncomfortable with the content. We will either fade the scene or discuss as is appropriate. The point is to tell a good story not to push boundaries. Finally I am available to discuss and correct any issues that arrise. If you are unsatisfied with the adventure I would much rather refund you the money you spent than to get a bad review. Please talk to me!
