About the adventure

This campaign has our players stepping into the shoes of outsiders freshly arrived on the outskirts of Barovia, in all likelihood having no idea how they could have gotten so very lost en route to their intended destination. From there, they'll go on to explore this strange locale, gradually uncovering its mysteries and navigating the dark realities of life in the valley, all the while seeking a way back to their homes beyond the mists. While D&D itself does facilitate a lot of wacky shenanigans, be advised that the setting for this adventure leans a bit dire. You'll be in a place that's foggy all the time, never receiving direct sunlight, and most denizens of the valley have a sort of gallows humor to them. Resources are scarce, as are openly helpful folk. By all means, bring some levity; I'm sure we'll all make our fair share of OOC jokes and snarky sidebars over the course of the game, myself included. Just don't expect Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows.

About me

15k+ Hours GMed | 7 Year Pro | Narrative-Focused Beyond all the above, what you're getting with me as a DM is a friendly, relaxed experience. In interpreting rules and making judgment calls, I aim for consistency and tend to err on the side of the player if there's no clear-cut answer at hand. While the PC adventurers may delve into all manner of dark, dangerous places, I try to build a welcoming environment for all players, which includes prioritizing player safety and ongoing communication. We play games to have fun, and that's only possible if players' needs are met. If all of the above sounds like the sort of thing you're looking for, don't hesitate to reach out and schedule your next adventure today. I look forward to hearing from you!

Character creation

Creating your character

Come to session zero with your level one character already made; I can help if you're new and that sounds daunting! We'll be starting at level one with standard array stats, creating our characters inside the Roll20 campaign for our group. WotC-official sources only, please. If you show up with some busted homebrew or something you found from D&D wiki, you will be asked to make a new character that follows the rules.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need accounts on Discord and Roll20 for sure, and optionally D&D Beyond if you prefer to use their sheet. Discord app tends to be more stable than using the browser version, so I highly suggest that. Invites to the community Discord and Roll20 campaign will be sent as part of onboarding, so please follow them when you receive them.

What Eric (RockNRole) brings to the table

I'm a pro GM of nearly ten years now, so I've got tons of fun voices, vibrant maps, and other visual aids. Because I find so many people would rather set their own soundtrack via Spotify or whatever, I don't typically use ambient music anymore. Combat is challenging, but not so brutal as to demand a certain kind of character design from players. I've been called "brutal, but fair" regarding how I play my characters intelligently without feeling the need to give them plot armor. I tend to run things pretty much Rules as Written, though I typically try to decide ambiguities in the players' favor. We're here to have fun, after all!

Safety

How Eric (RockNRole) creates a safe table

We'll have a session zero, and I'd ask that players raise any potential problem subjects as early as possible. That said, I recognize that sometimes we don't know what we don't know, so the door is always open for someone to call a timeout or request a fade to black for safety reasons. Impactful storytelling is cool and fun, but safety is paramount and ALWAYS takes priority.
