About the adventure
Gameplay in Rime of the Frostmaiden is based heavily on survival, exploration, and the whims of the players. Each of the 10 Towns has its own story to tell and players can choose to engage with as few or as many as they like. As you move forward in the story and learn more about what's happening in the world around them, you'll be encouraged to travel further afield where the elements themselves will be turned against you. The Choices you make matter a great deal in this story. Rime of the Frostmaiden manages to tell a complete and satisfying story without putting the players on a railroad in any way. The Module even comes with a unique "Character Secrets" feature that helps to create connections between PCs and the many moving parts of the world around them. When I first picked up the module, I was concerned that an all-tundra region would make gameplay feel monotonous and one-note but I was really pleasantly surprised to see that the background enhanced and accentuated diverse story beats in diverse ways! This game is friendly to roleplay veterans and newbies alike and I can't wait to run it for you!

About me
Now in my 7th year as a DM, I've been running players through games in a series of exclusively homebrew worlds. My players have gifted me with opportunities to hone my skills as a story-teller, a collaborator, and an improviser, and have walked away satisfied from both one-shots and longform campaigns alike. My tables are guaranteed safe for members of the LGBT+ community, as I am a member of that community myself. My villains may try to kill your characters, but they won't misgender them. My degree and background is in political science and activism, which gives me unique insight into world-building and intrigue and affords me the privilege of establishing urban environments that feel real and alive. My career as a social worker and background in mental health ensures that my tables create a trauma-informed environment in which to gently explore difficult topics and themes. My games will not use generative AI in any form.

Creating your character
Characters will be created during a FREE session Zero. All officially-published WotC materials are available for character creation. Unearthed Arcana and 3rd-party or homebrew material could be allowed after a discussion. Character stats will be rolled, but you can take the standard array if your total rolled is lower than the total offered by the array. Players may re-roll their first 1 when rolling for HP each level-up.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
All players need to do is have a working Roll20 account and be ready to join a new game! I'll work with you to communicate on the platform you prefer but I have Discord, Messenger, Teams, and Google Meets ready to go.
What Max brings to the table
In me, you will find a DM who puts a lot of power into player agency and lateral thinking. I love rewarding players who can solve a problem with their wit and who engage deeply with the worlds in which we play. I am a rule-of-cool-loving DM and while I have a deep understanding of the rules and mechanics of the game, you'll find me more than happy to roll with the punches and apply them flexibly to make sure a good story is told and leaves players feeling rewarded. I don't do much for character voices, but you won't hear my midwestern accent in a Dragon and if 2 NPCs are talking to each other, you'll know which one is saying what. I don't expect my players to do voices either but I welcome them warmly if you do and will try to give back the energy I'm given! The biggest thing I hope to provide my players is a magical time in my favorite region of a world I've grown to love. The Forgotten Realms and Icewind Dale specifically is where I first found my passion for roleplaying, and all I really want is to make that magic possible for someone else, too. Rime of the Frostmaiden is priced at a lower rate than other sessions or campaigns I intend to run because I just want to run this one so badly!
Homebrew rules
* To drink a potion, you may either use a Bonus Action and roll the healing dice associated with that potion, or you may use an Action and get maximum healing. * Wild Magic range scales up with every failed wild magic roll (I.E. the first spell you cast only creates a wild magic surge on a Natural 1; the next one will do it on a one or a two, and on until a surge is triggered.) * Jump up at 1 if you Nat20 on a death save. * In my long-form campaigns, players are gifted a free Nat20 on their birthday, which they can use during any session in a long-form campaign between then and their next birthday. They don't stack, so use it while you have it!

Safety
How Max creates a safe table
At Session Zero, players will be given an RPG consent sheet to make sure the experience stays safe for everybody involved. Just like with any kind of consent, the contents of these sheets may be modified at any time. We will also utilize X-cards and the Stoplight system to manage difficult subject matter. There will be time after sessions for a talk-back to discuss thoughts on the campaign and its progress.
