About the adventure
The Wyldhunters Guild protects the Islands of the Eye from the monsters that spawn within the mysterious Mist and, as usual, they are in desperate need of new recruits. You have answered the call and must report to the nearest Guildhouse to prove your worth. This short campaign will serve as an introduction to 5th Edition D&D and no prior knowledge is needed. The campaign will take characters from Level 1 to Level 3 in a homebrew world over 5 or 6 sessions (with a free Session 0) with plenty of support and guidance to help new players get the most out of the game.

About me
A long-time player and GM of tabletop RPGs with over thirty-five years of experience, I have been running D&D 5e for nearly seven years. I began my journey with as many "choose-your-own-adventure" style books as I could get my hands on, progressing to the red D&D Basic Rules Set by the time I was ten years old. My teens and twenties were spent wih Cyberpunk, GURPS, Storyteller, Traveller, and many more. Outside of gaming, I have worked multiple jobs, from craftsman to teacher, giving me a wealth of real-world experience and knowledge that I try to use to make my game worlds more grounded and "lived-in". I would like to think of myself as a storyteller first and foremost, and I enjoy developing stories for my players and (more importantly) with them. My aim as a GM is to create interesting and fun game worlds and situations that the players can engage with, changing the developing stories with their characters' actions. The Rule of Cool plays a large part in my games - I enjoy cinematic descriptions of action scenes, both creating them myself and especially having players describe their characters' actions in such a way - although very careful not to allow game-breaking precedent to be set! I look forward to sharing stories with you.

Creating your character
Character creation will begin during the Session 0, to be completed by the player before the first game session. Guideance will be provided both during and after the Session 0 if required. Characters will be starting at Level 1 and created using the 5e (2014) PHB and the Standard Array method. Character races and classes will be restricted to those found in the 5e PHB for simplicity's sake. It would be helpful if players could have an idea of the kind of character they would like to play, but assistance and advice will be available during the Session 0.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Creating accounts on both Discord and Roll20 will be essential as this is where the game will be played. The 5e PHB is mostly available free online in any number of places, including DnD Beyond. Other than that, a vague idea of character and an interest in playing is all that you will need.
What Jon brings to the table
In this game you can expect an attempt at NPC voices, but I cannot guarantee the quality or accuracy of them. Combat will be challenging, but rarely punishing. I will be using both maps and Theatre of the Mind, depending on the scale of the combat (and how well anticipated the combat encounter is). It is entirely possible that a character may die, but it is certainly not expected. I am a big fan of the Rule of Cool as a DM, as long as it isn't a "game-breaking" situation, and like to reward players for thinking outside the box. In terms of the Game World, documents covering the general information will be provided. These will include an overview of the geography, history, religion, and factions that the character would be aware of.
Homebrew rules
Drinking a Health Potion is a Bonus Action, but feeding one to someone else is still a full action. If you roll a Natural 1, it IS a Critical Failure. In most circumstances, this will have a minor negative effect (if that), and will mostly be played for laughs. In combat, however, a Critical Failure on an attack will both miss the target and allow the target to use a Reaction to make an Opportunity Melee Attack against the attacker. Of course, if an enemy rolls a Critical Failure, the same rule applies to them. Other combat related Critical Failures may impose a temporary negative effect on the character.

How Jon creates a safe table
A free Session 0 will be held in which we will go over expectations and possible triggering content. Players will be free to voice their concerns at this point, either openly or in secret to the DM. Stars and Wishes will be used after each session, which will allow players to guide the tone of the campaign - again, these can be discussed openly with the group or sent via private message to the DM. Finally, we will be observing X, N, and O cards which will take the form of private messages to and from the DM. These are to be used during gameplay to prevent any player from experiencing content that they are uncomfortable with.
