About the adventure

In the quiet frontier town of Lastbridge, no-one could possibly predict that the doings of the ancient empire – of which the Kingdom of the Seven Marches is merely a surviving fragment – could come to impact their lives and livelihoods. But events put into motion far into past – so far that even the names of the realms and city-states are lost to history – have begun to reach sinister tendrils into even remote rustic villages. Your characters, based in Lastbridge, even if they are not from there, will be called upon to help their town meet the onerous demands of a new overlord, seek justice for those wrongly accused, explore ruins, right wrongs…and gradually become aware that something bigger, something darker, is going on behind the scenes. Expect good old fashioned dungeon crawls, deep mysteries, intrigue and skullduggery, and twists and turns aplenty! Fell Deeds Long Forgotten will take the characters from level 1 to level 8 over 20-25 sessions. We will use the DnD 5E 2014 or 2024 rules, DnD Beyond, Roll 20, Zoom, and dedicated Google Drive. The campaign will begin with a (free ) Session Zero, with players generating characters during/after the session. Players of any walk of life (over the age of 18) and level of game experience are welcome. I work hard to make an inclusive, comfortable, and most of all, fun table at which to build stories and memories. We’ll work together to fine tune the tone and play style of the campaign, and I actively recruit player input for worldbuilding. My goal is to craft an immersive and memorable setting that characters can really have the feel of inhabiting, so that the players can create and develop characters that THEY can inhabit. I’ve been running games for over 40 years, and still game with some players from those very early days. I’ve also played with dozens (maybe low hundreds? Who could count…) of different game masters, and have seen a lot of play styles. If something doesn’t work for our table, we’ll try something else. Prepare to feel the consequences of Fell Deeds Long Forgotten!

About me

Mellowgoth, aka Doc, aka Dan, here. I've been sitting around tables and rolling dice for more than four decades, and it's never enough... I love telling stories with a group of friends (with those pesky dice dictating terms sometimes) and stepping outside the bounds of everyday reality. I'm committed to a kind, inclusive game table for anyone 10-100. Well, kind to the players. Characters DO occasionally have misfortunes befall them, after all. I'm comfortable with homebrew and pre-published adventures and settings, and welcome - insist on, really - robust player feedback to get a game everyone enjoys.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be made during and after Session Zero in D&D Beyond. We will be starting at Level One under DnD 5E 2014 or 2024 rules, as decided by the players.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Please have at least free-tier accounts for the following: DnD Beyond, Roll20, and Zoom. I will also be using a dedicated Google drive for campaign information, so a Gmail address will be helpful.

What Mellowgoth brings to the table

I have played in and game mastered an awful lot of games over the last 40+ years, and I hope I’ve learned a bit of something from each of them. In general, I want to help my players make stories that they will tell their friends fondly for years to come – memorable moments, vibrant, living characters, immersive settings, and, occasionally, side-splitting laughter. I do my best to master the rules – not to restrict creativity, but to provide a commonality of experience, and the predictability that drives verisimilitude. In our own world, we generally know how our day to day experience works – air, gravity, basic social interaction, physical risk, etc. Game rules, done right, give us the certainty that hopping down from the curb harmlessly on one day doesn’t cause multiple compound fractures and internal organ damage the next. That being said, rules are meant to drive and enhance a game, not limit it. I am open to discussing rule interpretation at breaks or between sessions ( I like to keep the game flowing, so I try not to stop too long mid-session to work out rules questions.) I also like to make sure that we are in agreement and informed when leveling characters and taking new abilities. Nothing is worse that arranging a whole character build around a certain ability or spell, only to find that, when you use it, the DM doesn’t think it works the way you think it works. I do a bit of voice and accent variation, but I am not a professional by any means. My goal is to help NPCs and antagonists stand out, and help players keep them all sorted. Players using voices or accents are encouraged, but by no means required. If first-person role play is uncomfortable for a player, third-person input (‘My ranger Kellan tells the guard about the spider nest’) is perfectly fine, as long as the player is engaged. I like story, character development, memorable plots (with some good twists), and good times. I enjoy players that can take a setting and session seriously – though that does not mean that we are always serious. We’re all here to have fun, and I’ve found that a table that laughs often is one I want to come back to. I strive to maintain flexibility, and thrive on player input. We’ll work together to build the setting, tone and story, and it will all undoubtedly change over the course of the campaign. I sincerely hope you’ll give Fell Deeds Long Forgotten a chance, and I hope I can demonstrate why some of my friends still have fun at my table after decades.

Homebrew rules

Safety

How Mellowgoth creates a safe table

We will set clear expectations during Session Zero. I generally use Lines and Veils, and some variation of X/N/O cards, either in private messages or the full game chat/ voice chat. I will ask for feedback at the end of each session, both on the general tone and pace of the table, and everyone's comfort level. Open and honest communication is key, so please, let me know how we can make every session better!
