About the adventure

Hazecrux is a city where myth and legend walk the streets alongside ordinary people—and most never notice. The Mist hides the strangeness from the Sleepers, shrouding the mythic in the mundane. A knight in shining armor might pass by unnoticed, save for the regard one might give someone decked out in riot gear and a shock baton, which they see instead of steel armor and sword. When reality becomes too strange to explain, the Mist can fail, though it usually smooths over memories and fills in the blanks later. People forget the strange and remember what happened. But some can see through the Mist; those who have awakened as Rifts can see the world as it is. They are individuals touched by myths and stories. Tales that live through them and seek to guide their lives. These legends grant incredible supernatural abilities, but come with the cost of the lives of those who carry them. The more power a Rift embraces, the closer they come to becoming nothing more than an avatar of the thing itself. Of course, the city itself has a history and a story, and that has not always been peaceful. Many years ago, a disaster known as the Calamity shattered the city that was. During the chaos, the Original Overseer unveiled his plan and sent everyone to the safety of bunks built beneath the city in the Understead. He apparently did not predict that the legendary hero Excelsior would return from the dead and turn on the city itself; A city he once saved. An entire bunkers of civilians were slaughtered before a single luchador from El Distro finally defeated him. Since then, masked luchadores have become the city’s champions, filling the void left when the once-celebrated Guild of Superheroes collapsed due to their siding with their returned leader. After the Calamity, the Overseer vanished. His successor was Tina Bellows, the woman who saved his life from the attack of Excelsior, and was broken in the process. She now runs the city more openly. Unlike her predecessor, even Sleepers know her name. Not all are happy with her rule. A young man Zander Tombs has become a rising voice challenging her rule. He claims she was never meant for the job, and calls for liberation and rebellion. Tina counters that his message should carry little weight as his father, Adrian Tombs, is a known criminal rumored to control much of the city’s criminal underworld. Though Zander seems to be in possession of a mostly functional spaceship. This massive craft looms over the city skyline. Even the Sleepers have begun to notice the strange ship in the sky or shuttles coming from it, sweeping into the city. This campaign focuses on mystery and character drama. Players will investigate conspiracies and decide how their characters fit into the growing conflict. This game is ideal for players who enjoy roleplay-heavy storytelling.

About me

I usually tend to enjoy coming up with the world or the story within the world with the players and love to let the players decisions determine the plot as that also lets me feels a since of excitement and adventure. I have a few living worlds I do run in that have grown and evolved with many stories told.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will discuss and create characters, but players are encouraged to develop their own concepts. Current players have a running theme of playing rifts of characters from video games.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a Discord account and a Roll20 account. We will run the game on a Discord Server. You will need a mic. Use of a camera is optional. Games may be streamed and recorded for posterity and for review or incase players or others want to catch up with that they missed or what is happening.

What Branden brings to the table

I create a world of interesting characters and various plots to interact with. You should have a mission or direction to follow, but if you decide to blaze your own trail, that should also be acceptable. I can provide character art, and I should be getting some theme music for the character to use when they are in the spotlight. A Heroforge figure may be obtained for the character if we use or switch to a VTT that uses digital figures.

Homebrew rules

I have adapted the rolling system to use an upgrading dice pool mechanic from the Defiant Roleplaying System rather than the 2d6+power system. Power will determine the pool of dice rolled, with each +1 upgrading a die one size, starting with a pool of 3 d6's. Each is upgraded to a D8 until there are 3 D8s at Potential 3, and to a D10 until there are 3 D10s at Potential 6. Each die is assessed individually for success or failure. A roll of 5+ on any die is a single success. If the roll totals 0 Successes, It is a failure (as if rolling a total of 6 and under) If the roll totals 1 Success, it is considered a partial success (as if rolling a total of 7-9) If the roll has 2 Successes, it is considered a full success (As if rolling a 10+) If the roll gets 3 or more successes and the roll has the ability to be Dynamite, it is considered a Dynamite roll (As if rolling a 12+). If Dynamite is not unlocked on that roll it is just a full success instead. Rolls that use the Power to generate things (like Clues or Juice) will instead use the Tier of the roll. Potential 2 and under: Tier 1 Potential 3-5 : Tier 2 Potential 6-11 : Tier 3 Potential 12+ : Tier 4 Juicing your Rolls: Additionally to the other uses of Juice, you may spend Juice you previously have generated and have stored to amp up another roll so long as it follows the golden rule "The effects you wish to generate with your Juice must fit its method and the circumstances in which you are using it." meaning it must make since as to why this Juice would help you with this roll. When you spend a point of Juice before the roll, you add an additional d8 to your roll, meaning you roll 4 dice and check for the same success thresholds. That d8 may be upgraded to a d10 if your potential is 7 or higher, and thus all other dice are already d10s. You may spend Juice after the roll to increase your lowest-value die by 1. You may spend as much juice as you need this way until you are satisfied with the result or run out of applicable juice. You may spend Juice from different sources to increase the result in this way, so long as all sources follow the golden rule.

Safety

How Branden creates a safe table

The listed triggers represent themes that are possible or likely in the game, but may not be a complete list. Character actions and player agency can introduce unexpected situations, so please keep in mind that mindfulness and communication are important throughout the campaign. We will discuss triggers, lines, and veils during a potential player interview, where I can provide more specific information on the likelihood of certain events and plan to address these issues. We will again share boundaries with all players during Session 0, where I will reiterate what the game will likely contain and take any open questions. Once we are in-game, we will have an Open Door policy where, if a player needs to take a break or needs to have a discussion privately with the GM, they are free to do so. If the session is being recorded or streamed, any safety-related discussion will take place off recording and be between Player and GM unless all parties agree that additional parties should be involved in the discussion and are willing to have those additional parties be part of the discussion. While the game may explore mature themes, the goal is always dramatic storytelling rather than shock value or to horrify the players. Characters with ill intentions may commit cruel acts, these will generally be implied rather than graphically described. If there is something a player is sensitive about, particularly, I encourage you to speak to me before, though we can and will break to discuss if it comes up unexpectedly. Ultimately, the most horrific elements in this campaign should be primarily cosmic, eldritch, or perhaps institutional in nature rather than personal. My hope is that the most frightening thing the game may present to a character or player is a mirror.
