About the adventure

*In the world abandoned by God, life goes on…* After the god-ordained apocalypse known as Revelations, God left humans and demons behind on the ruined Earth and abandoned them completely. Demons were created to make humans more pure by weeding out the weak and having the strong resist temptation, and now that God has taken all of the good and pure up to heaven, they have no more purpose to Him. Left with no more purpose, Lucifer chose as an last act of defiance to help the few humans left behind after the Calamity rebuild the world and make it a better place. Of course, that’s history book stuff to you kids, because it happened 200 years ago. In the post-post apocalypse, the world has entered a fragile state of stability thanks to Lucifer’s Coven system. In order to help rebuild the world and otherwise use magic for benevolent purposes, willing young humans in this world will enter a contract with a Demon to be able to do magic, with anyone who wants to be a witch being required to form a contract at age 12. The contracts for children can be broken at any time and are mutually symbiotic. Your Demon is your mentor, familiar, source of your magic, and even an extra parental figure all in one. They give you magic, teach you, and assure your safety in dire situations, and you feed them and give them a purpose again. You all are young Witches learning in New Bethlehem Academy, who have been sent on a hands on school assignment to help rebuild the world with your Demons, specifically you are to aid a small struggling town known as Azmaeta, which has a string of bad luck lately. However, the bad luck it experiences seems a bit odd, and perhaps purposeful. With this mystery hanging in the air and the ever looming threat of purposeless Demons causing mayhem, devout terrifying Angels who believe this world has no reason to be alive, and normal people who can’t be trusted, can you all complete your assignment before something terrible happens? Special note: Despite the post-post apocalypse setting, the tone is much closer to Ghibli's *Nausicaa and the Valley of Wind* or *My Time at Portia* and focuses on themes of fixing the mistakes of past generations and creating a better world, even if you can never go back. Also, note that this story extensively discusses themes of toxic religion, especially of those who call themselves Christians, and the real-world harm they have caused throughout history. It is inspired heavily by the GM's upbringing in the Deep South of the USA, which is now dominated by MAGA beliefs. This story holds no actual malice towards Christianity or Christians who don't hold such hostile values, but depicts a theology beholden to these toxic ideals. if you aren't comfortable with a version of the Christian God depicted as a fire-and-brimstone sort of antagonist, this isn't the game for you.

About me

Hi, I'm Luciano, but everyone calls me Luci. I like to make games that push the boundaries of what a system can provide and the stories it can tell. Kids with Brooms in a ghibli-style apocalypse? Yup!! Thirsty Sword Lesbians but with psychological horror? Yup!! Monster of the Week but with Matrix-style reality shenanigans? Yup!!! (Do my campaigns almost always have an element of eldritch horror? Yup. Have I been lovingly made fun of it by basically all my players? ...Yup.) I make games with storylines and plots that can often get pretty off the rails, but at the center of each lies a world with a bleeding heart that, while flawed, deserves to be saved, and is often filled with equally flawed but compassionate NPCs who are the heroes of their own stories. And my biggest goal as a GM is to integrate your character into this world and among these people, and to make the story work for you. I don't do TTRPG worlds where the players feel otherworldly and like they're above the world, like the world is so delicate that it and all its people will collapse if the players' aren't there. Your character is a hero, but they are a part of the world, and I aim to make you feel that way, often revolving my writing around catering to the storylines and interests of each player character. So if you're ready to get real attached to NPCs, if you're ready for me to make it my goal to make you get emotional, and if you're ready to go through the craziest hells and come out the other side in order to literally sucker punch an interpretation of the Christian God-- uh, hit me up?

Character creation

Creating your character

Please attend my free one-on-one character creation session, or at least find time to talk to me extensively over text. This world has a LOT of custom rules, the most important being your character having a Demon, who acts as a mentor, familiar, and source of magic all in one. Otherwise, session 0 will be go on for WAY too long and there will possibly have to be multiple sesh 0s. Do not show up to session 0 expecting me to teach you the entire system and help you make a character. If you're very familiar with the Kids on Brooms system, exceptions can be made, but you should still at least communicate with me over text a decent amount in order to accomodate for the various house rules that fit into the lore.

What Luciano Sterious-Cortese brings to the table

I enjoy providing free character creation sessions and short solo prologues for this game in order to acclimate you to the world. I also love badly sketching memes of funny moments in our campaigns and might with inspiration sketch player characters or well liked NPCs. As needed, I will provide sketches of important references, mostly floor plans, important NPCs, or graphs in order to understand more complex parts of the world's lore. As for audio, I do character voices, though I am not a professional VA, i use ambient music, and I plan at some point to begin producing and incorporating my own original music exclusively for my campaigns. Like most my campaigns, there is a set arc for the story, but the actual content that appears on the way depends on the likes and interests of the players. If there's an interest in ciphers, I'll include more cipher based puzzles, etcetera.

Homebrew rules

There isn't enough room here to explain in depth the homebrew rules, because After The Holy Book is almost its own KOB hack in content. However, to be brief --Leveling system --Light combat system (WILL) --Coven system (schools of magic that allow different areas of powers and higher chances of success in using the one you specialize in, but require teamwork due to limited areas) --Special Items --Unlockable Skills based on growing closer to NPCs and completing personal character arcs and most importantly DEMONS In ATHBC, your magic comes from a mutually symbiotic contract with your Demon. Demons are your mentor, familiar, and source of magic all at once, and usually are a constant companion-- and often act as a parental figure or guardian. A player's Demon will always be well intentioned and genuinely care for their witch, but they have their own problems and are haunted by mistakes that they struggle not to have you repeat. Demons represent the central theme of the game, of the older generation having to help the new generation fix the mistakes of the past, and thus are extremely important to the story and your character-- thus the insistence on pre-session character creation, because your choice of Demon will likely affect your character. There are two premade Demons in ATHBC, one of which is required to be chosen by a player for plot reasons, but players are heavily encouraged to help create their very own demon or give the GM a direction to follow in creating one for them.

Safety

How Luciano Sterious-Cortese creates a safe table

There will be a discord channel for lines and veils that can be added to at any time for any reason without question (unless you're using it to be a jerk.) X card rule is in place, though since I am often distracted gming, players should try to use it primarily through my DMs, out loud, or even through use of the discord soundboard. After session, I will always check in, especially after sessions with darker content, and usually when any player needs a bio break I will make it a full break for everyone and to check in. Also, before each session that might especially touch on a new sensitive topic or go into it more intensely, I will warn players so they can prepare emotionally.
